William Jakrapatr sat by the window of their local coffee shop, his fingers nervously tapping against the cold ceramic mug. The rain had started to fall in steady sheets outside, but it didn’t matter; he knew Est would be here soon. He glanced at the time on his phone again—an hour had passed since they’d agreed to meet. William checked his messages once more, but there were none from Est. His fingers hovered over the screen, but there was nothing to say. He pushed the phone back into his pocket and stared out the window, hoping he’d see his friend walking toward him.
The low murmur of voices around him filled the air, but it was nothing more than background noise—until William overheard something that made him freeze. A group of people sitting nearby were whispering about a car accident. The words caught his attention, dragging him into the conversation despite himself.
“It was a bad one,” a woman said, her voice trembling slightly. “I heard it involved some big names. Celebrities, even. Terrible thing.”
“Yeah,” the man beside her added, his voice hushed. “They say all of them died.”
William’s heart skipped a beat. The mention of celebrities sent an uneasy chill down his spine, and his mind raced. Could it be? He couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. His gaze flicked back to the clock again—still no sign of Est.
He couldn't help himself. His fingers pulled out his phone again, this time to check the news. As he scrolled through the headlines, the words blurred before him. There it was, the headline that made his stomach lurch:
Tragic Car Accident Claims the Lives of Several Individuals.
His eyes frantically scanned the article, his pulse quickening. The more he read, the harder it became to breathe. The accident had occurred not far from here. A few people had died in the wreck, but it was the list of names that struck him the hardest. The victims weren’t just random strangers. They were people he knew.
William’s eyes moved over the names, his mind struggling to accept the reality. There it was. At the very top of the list.
Est Supha.
He felt the world around him go still, the chatter of the coffee shop fading into nothing. His fingers went numb as he read the words again, hoping they were some cruel mistake. But there was no mistake. Est’s name was unmistakable, printed in black and white for all the world to see.
William’s heart pounded in his chest, a cold sweat forming on his skin. He didn’t want to believe it. Est wasn’t the type to be caught in something like this. He was supposed to be here, sitting across from William, joking about the latest movie he’d seen or complaining about the latest script he had to read. But Est wasn’t coming.
He wasn’t coming because he was gone.
For a moment, William felt as though he couldn’t breathe. His hands shook as he clutched the phone, his mind racing to make sense of what was happening. It couldn’t be real. Not Est. Not his friend, his co-star, his brother in arms. He had just seen him the day before, laughing and teasing him about his bad taste in coffee.
With shaky hands, William stood up, knocking over his chair. He barely noticed. His mind was too clouded, too frantic. He had to get to the scene. He had to see for himself.
The coffee shop door swung open as William rushed outside, his heart pounding in his chest, but the cold rain on his face did little to calm his racing thoughts. The world around him seemed distant, as though he were walking in a dream, disconnected from everything.
As he stumbled down the street, he thought of Est. How he had always been the brave one—the one who could light up a room, make anyone laugh, even when things were at their darkest. They’d been through so much together. How could it all end so suddenly? How could Est be gone, just like that?
He found himself at the edge of the street, his eyes scanning the wreckage of the accident, the flashing lights of ambulances and police cars casting eerie shadows. His breath caught in his throat as he took in the sight, his legs feeling weak beneath him.
But he didn’t need to look any closer. He already knew. Est wasn’t coming. And the world, in all its cruel, chaotic glory, had just taken away someone too important to lose.
