The sun cast a golden hue over the bustling fairgrounds, laughter and music floating through the spring air. William Jakrapatr adjusted the brim of his cap, scanning the rows of stalls lit up with colorful lights. Beside him, Est Supha munched on the last bit of cotton candy, his smile bright and carefree.
“Alright, what’s next?” William asked, nudging Est with his elbow.
Est pointed at the nearby ring toss booth. “I bet I can win that giant plush bunny.”
William raised an eyebrow, smirking. “You? You barely made the basketball shot earlier.”
“That was rigged,” Est said dramatically, tossing the empty stick from the cotton candy. “This time, I’ve got it.”
They spent the next half hour playing games, cheering each other on, and collecting tiny prizes. Est did not win the giant bunny—but he did win a tiny duck figurine that he held up triumphantly like it was gold. Then they hit the rides—teacups, a haunted house, and a mildly terrifying drop tower that left Est clutching William’s arm and swearing revenge.
Eventually, they slowed down, wandering along the fair’s main path with drinks in hand—bubble tea for William, something fruity for Est.
William was in mid-laugh at one of Est’s jokes when his gaze flicked ahead—and froze. A troupe of clowns had emerged from the corner near the carousel, handing out balloons, their painted faces twisted into exaggerated smiles.
Panic flared in William’s chest on Est’s behalf.
Est hadn’t seen them yet.
Without a second thought, William stepped in front of Est and gently pulled him in, wrapping an arm firmly around his waist. His other hand found the back of Est’s head, guiding it to rest against his shoulder.
Est blinked, confused. “Uh—Will?”
“Shh,” William said, heart racing but voice smooth. “I just… felt like hugging you.”
Est stiffened for a second, then let out a soft laugh. “Random much?”
“Mmhmm.” William kept his tone casual, shielding Est’s view as the clowns passed behind them. “You’re warm. And I like this. So deal with it.”
Est smiled against his shoulder, unaware of the danger that had passed. “You’re such a weirdo.”
“I know,” William replied, a quiet breath of relief escaping his lips. “But I’m your weirdo.”
And for a moment, as the chaos of the fair swirled around them, they stayed like that—just two young actors stealing a moment of peace in the middle of the noise.
