"You're Mr. Popular & I'm Miss. Who is she?"

Luke's P.O.V

For the rest of the weekend following the beach gig, I thought about Ellie quite a bit. Well, quite a lot.

She had some good points about popularity when we were talking. She was right. She understood the mechanics of how our school worked. She had the shit end of it all but she accepted it.

I didn't like that though. She didn't deserve that.

I also followed her band's twitter account finally since now she knew I knew about them.

On Monday, I was standing by Michael's locker, our usual spot, when I saw Ellie walk inside.

It was back to that version of Ellie. The one who looks down, who avoids people, who wants to be invisible.

When she was walking right in front of us, I really didn't care about my name at the school.

"Hey, Ellie!" I called out. Her head quickly turned around & she searched a bit until she saw me waving. Calum then turned to wave at her too. She literally gave us the most subtle wave before she continued down the hall away from us.

"I'll be right back." I told Calum. I didn't want Ellie to be like this. She didn't have to be this way around us. We had just spent that night on the beach talking & now I say hi to her yet she stays hidden.

"Ellie, hey!" I yelled out once I saw her stop at her locker. I knew which hall hers was in just from her last name. I then ran the final distance until I was standing beside her. "Hey."

"Why are you talking to me?" She asked as she was moving books around in her locker.

"What do you mean?"

"Why are you talking to me?"

"Because I wanted to say hi."

"Well hi."

"Hey, I thought we had a good time the other night hanging around & talking. Are we not friends or something?"

Ellie was currently bending over while putting a book into her bag & then she stood up, throwing her bag over her shoulder.

"You're correct, we're not really friends. I appreciate you guys talking to me the other night like that was super cool & great support but Luke, we're not friends."

"Why not?"

"Because right now, we're at school. You have your place & I have mine."

"But it does't have to be like that."

"But it does. It's easiest for me if things just stay the way they are, okay?"

"Uhm." I couldn't form an answer but it wasn't okay to me. Before I could say anything, she had already walked away.

-

"So what happened?" Calum asked me as he took his seat at our lunch table. I had told Michael about the incident when I saw him during English class.

"I went to talk to Ellie & she said we can't be friends."

"Why not?"

"Because at school, we have our own places & she doesn't want to mess with that or something. I don't know. It makes me upset though."

"Well when you ran off, everyone asked why you were chasing after her." Michael told me. "They were asking me why you were running after her."

"Yea, I know they did but today when she walked into the class I have with her, she didn't even look at me." Calum then explained. "It's like she honestly doesn't want us to know she exists & I don't think I can do that."
