"Please . . ."
She takes a shuddering breath and continues. "He managed to do his part though, before they took him. He got the right equipment to let us escape. He saved us. I took you here, to the Standard dimension. It seemed like the perfect place. You were only four years old at the time. You were so close to your father, and without him, all you would do was cry every day. It would have been better, I thought, if you didn't remember what happened. That way you would be safer if Fusion ever came looking. That way you could be happier, without the past haunting you. I was a scientist in Fusion, working with some of the best. I knew how to make some of the more advanced technology, though nothing to the standard of interdimensional travel. So, I used my experience to create a device that could erase your memories. At least, most of them. And I did."
"You erased my memories? YOU ERASED MY MEMORIES!!" Your mum flinches at your tone. "YOU DESTROYED MY ENTIRE CHILDHOOD! HOW DARE YOU! YOU HAD NO RIGHT! THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY CHOICE, NOT YOURS!"
"(y/n) . . ."
"Save it. How can I trust you anymore after what you did? You made me forget him. You made me forget dad. You get to remember him, but I don't. Don't you realize how selfish that is?"
"But . . ."
"You have lied to me my entire life. My life is a lie. I am a lie. And this lie is done."
She tries to embrace you, to hold and comfort you, but you push her away.
"Never again. That is a promise."
With that you storm out the door. A thin line splinters from the top of the door to mid-way as you slam it shut. Okay, maybe that was a bit much, but you can't help the satisfaction that the damage causes you. [I am sorry that you are such a mean person here. Wow, great job me...]
You storm down the street, not entirely sure of where you are headed. You don't really care where you end up, as long as it is far away from her.
The exercise has done nothing to calm your temper, and the fact that you somehow end up at the harbor doesn't exactly help. You don't know why, but you always end up at the nearest thing to the ocean whenever you are angry. It may be some sort of habit from your time in Fusion, not that you would know. Somebody erased your memories from then.
You avoid the busier areas, and find a peaceful spot along the water's edge tucked in between the warehouses. The gentle lull of the waves against the docks takes the edge off your flame.
In some very small ways, you could understand why your mother did what she did, but it still doesn't make it right. She got to know your father, when you had that taken away from you, and not like where there isn't a choice either. There was a choice, but she stole that too. In too many ways, she stole your life away. [Okay, sorry but this is getting a bit too dark for the mood of the story, so let's brighten it up a bit shall we?]
You can feel the resentment rise up again, and you turn your back on the water, heading further into the maze of warehouses. Your pace quickens until you are running full speed through the concrete jungle, like you could somehow outrun your past, outrun the truth.
As your vision starts to blur with tears, you duck into the nearest warehouse and slam the worn metal door shut behind you. The empty room beyond is dark. And familiar.
You hesitantly take a step further in. The only light comes from the dust-caked windows. It is barely enough, but still you can see a faint trail of footprints marking a path through the dirt. That's new.
You finally link why you know this place. The thought makes your heartbeat quicken. This was where you came to find Shun – when Yuto was hurt, on the day you first met. What were the chances that you would end up here? You take another step, into one of the few pools of light, dust motes dancing around you to a phantom rhythm.
"Who are you? Why are you here?" You startle at the sound. There was someone else out there, waiting in the darkness.
"Answer me." The clipped tone makes you flinch, but you really have no choice but to speak.
"I-My name is (y/n). I got lost." You brush away the tears from before and step farther into the light. The least you could do is find out who you are talking to, but the shadows make it hard to see into the warehouse. All you can make out is the tall, slim, figure of someone.
Your breath catches in your throat. Maybe they are another one of those Obelisk Force soldiers? They do have their duel disk out after all.
"I find it hard to believe that you got lost and ended up here when this place is so hard to find."
"B-but I swear! I just got lost!"
"Liar." That word strikes you hard and your resolve solidifies.
"I. Am. Not. A. Liar."
"Then duel me. Winner walks away." You were good, and so you would at least stand a chance. You really needed to blow off the steam anyway.
"Only if I can see who I am dueling first."
"Fine."
The figure emerges from their hiding spot into a pool of light similar to yours not 20 metres away.
"Let's duel." The bright yellow eyes staring intently into your own are the same ones from only a few nights ago. He hadn't even changed his clothes.
"Shun?"
