On your way to the shops, Yuto pulls you to the side of the path and sits you down on a nearby bench, pulling a scrap of paper and pen from his pocket. [idk why he has them but...]

"The fastest route would be to stop at your house first."

You nod and scribble a quick note to your mum.

This is just to let you know that I am safe. I will come back home eventually, but right now I will stay with – you pause – friends until I sort things out. Please avoid contacting me. I don't want you to make the situation and my mind any more messed up.

(y/n)

You fold the note up neatly, and then start towards your house.

"Hey Yuto?"

"Mmm."

"Would you mind slipping this under the door? It's just, I don't want to chance at her seeing me, and, and..."

"Sure, I understand."

You smile gratefully and hand him the slip of paper. You then hang back in the growing shadows as he quietly approaches the house and slides your note under the door.

He gives a small smile too as he joins back up with you, and you head back in the direction of the shops.

Once arrived, you find a quaint little café and order (favourite food) and (favourite drink) at the counter. You turn to Yuto expectantly.

He shrugs.

"I can't choose. Just get whatever is cheap." You feel strangely touched that he is considering the fact that you're paying. Still, he deserves more than the bottom line for what he's done.

You go ahead and order (second favourite food) and (second favourite drink) and (third favourite food) and (third favourite drink) so that Yuto and Shun can at least have some choice.

Once you had payed and the order was prepared, Yuto offers to carry the food as you walk back to the warehouse.

Shun is impatient when you arrive.

"What took you so long?"

You give him a long look.

"Food takes time to prepare, you know."

"Whatever. Let's just eat."

You spread your findings on a cleaner part of the floor, and then take your meal for yourself.

"You guys can choose what you like. I hope there is at least something there that you will eat."

Yuto's eyes go wide as he opens one of the containers.

"Hey Shun! It's (third favourite food)! And there's even (second favourite drink) too!"

Yuto passes the items off to his friend, whose face still shows no sign of emotion, then takes the (second favourite food) and (third favourite drink) for himself.

"To be honest, I've never tried this, but it smells really good."

He takes a bite, and you see his face light up, then relax again as the full flavour hits him.

"This is so good. I haven't had food like this in a long time. This must have cost you a fortune (y/n)!"

You smile sheepishly and quickly stuff the receipt into one of your pockets. [soooooo guilty ;)]

"It was nothing." You brush off his complement and start on your own meal.

After you're all finished, Shun's the one to speak first.

"Thank you, (y/n). I will deal with the rubbish."

You smile at him for the kind offer, and hand over your empty containers.

Yuto then gets up and walks over to a bundle of what looks a bit like clothes or blankets or something, and pulls out a faded bit of cloth. He comes back to where you are sitting and hands it over.

"It's not much, but it should do. There is a tap outside two warehouses south if you want to freshen up, or get a drink at any time, though the water isn't the cleanest, so maybe stick to washing with it."

That same smile crawls back onto his face.

"Then I think you should get some sleep. It's been a long day, and you look like the walking dead."

"Like you can talk." You can't stop the retort, and for a moment, you worry that you have offended him, but his smile only grows. The sight lifts a weight off of your chest that you didn't even realize existed.

"But seriously, your skin is probably salty from tears and your hair looks like a mess. You really should do something about it."

You scoff, and storm out the door in mock outrage.

You take your time freshening up, letting the clean(ish) water wash away all the stress and sadness from the day.

Afterwards, you sneak back through the night and into the warehouse, before climbing into your makeshift bed and happily letting the dark haze of sleep engulf you.

*skipping into your dream*

When you open your eyes, you find yourself strapped to a bench in a cold, white room. Your head is pounding and you're still dazed from whatever drug you have been given. Your limbs feel like lead, so you don't even try to sit up, not that you could thanks to the shackles around your wrists.

You're about to call out when a rough voice stops you.

"And the little girl?"

It comes from outside the closed door, but you can still hear the whisper of conversation. Another, deeper voice answers.

"The doctor claims that the prototype was successful. She was able to travel between dimensions just by using her mind, and the amplification chip."

"Thanks to her natural abilities, this might actually work. She could be our most dangerous weapon yet."

"Her mental capacity continues to increase with age. Soon, she may gain a will of her own and turn against us. Then no one will be able to stop her."

"Let us hope that day never comes. For now, we will continue with the experiment. She should be awake by now. Let's see how much pain her body can take before she passes out."

A dark laugh follows, and then a third voice joins, laced with eagerness and anticipation. It is unmistakably feminine – and familiar.

"This should be... interesting."

You have to stop yourself from screaming. It is the voice of your mother.

[A/N]

Sorry that the update is so short! I am going away for about a week and a half soon, so I won't be able to update, but I will still write and hopefully have a couple of chapters ready when I return.

Happy reading!! :)
