Wastelands → Newt [Movie Trilogy]

18 → "LIGHTNING STORM"

"Okay, let's go." Thomas orders. "We gotta go. C'mon."

They begin to retrieve their packs, Adeline slipping hers on. She turns to exchange a glance with Newt, who nods her way. They begin to move away from the storm, Thomas repeating the words; "let's go", hurrying them to move. They begin to turn on their heels, taking off into a sprint, the dark clouds dropping closer to the ground. Lightning strikes in various spots. They run towards the lights, which Adeline realises turns out to be a building. How they missed it as the sun was setting, it was the last thing to worry about. Adeline was sprinting, just on Teresa's heels.

"Hurry!" Minho orders from somewhere. Adeline can't make out how far he is from her.

"Go!" Teresa shrills. "C'mon, Adeline! Go!"

"I'm running as fast as my buggin' legs can carry me!" Adeline snaps, only briefly peering back. Lightning zaps ahead of them, causing the group to duck. Thomas turns briefly to peer behind, just as Adeline had.

"Keep moving! C'mon!" Thomas screams. More lightning. "C'mon Teresa! Adeline, move!"

Not bothering to respond to Thomas, Adeline pumps her legs to keep going. To speed up. Her legs were already aching, preventing her from running any faster. Lightning strikes closer to them.

"We're getting closer!" Minho points out. They're nearing the building, so close to safety, when lightning strikes close to Minho, then near Adeline. Then, one strikes Minho, throwing him to the ground. Thomas falls in the process. Another lightning strike occurs, which gets Adeline arm in the process of throwing her against the side of an abandoned car. She rolls onto her back, ears ringing. Pain exploding throughout her arm. She can only grasp her arm in pain, gritting her teeth. Consciousness slipping.

The group come to a stop. Thomas gets to his feet, screaming Minho's name. Screaming Adeline's, as he notices the girl, too. Newt hears the mention of her name, then realises that Minho wasn't the only one to get struck by lightning. Newt rushes to her side, skidding onto his knees. Thomas is closest to Minho, and he staggers towards him, getting to him. Trying to help him up — but he's out cold. Aris gets to Thomas, as does the others. Newt screams for them to get Minho up, before his eyes lock on Adeline again, barely moving, clutching her arm. Head lolling to the side as unconsciousness tries to pull her under. Newt is frozen in his place, terrified of the possibility she could be gravely hurt. Teresa moves first, racing to his side.

"Newt, help me!" She orders. Newt returns from his stupor, nodding. They help her up, Newt grunting in effort as they carry the barely conscious girl towards the building. Frypan urges them inside, and as soon as they make it inside, they stumble to get their flashlights on, casting light to see. Thomas, Frypan and Teresa are kneeling over Minho, calling out to him, but Newt doesn't leave Adeline's side. Mainly everyone's attention is on Minho within the first minute or so escaping into the building.

"Hey — Minho! Can you hear me?" Thomas calls out to the unconscious Runner, but the boy doesn't respond. For a split moment, Thomas panics. "C'mon, man!"

As if he finally heard Thomas' plea, Minho suddenly sucks in a mouthful of air, eyes snapping open. His eyes dart around, coming back from the unconscious state he was just in. Relief fills their eyes, realising the Runner was alright.

"What happened?" The Asian boy questions, staring up at the faces peering down at him.

"You got struck by lightning." Teresa states.
