34 → "MAKE YOUR PEACE"

Start from the beginning

"Hey." Newt's reflection appears in the mirror, where he leans against the doorframe. He wears a similar outfit to that of the time back at the Right Arm base all those months ago. "Ready?"

"Yeah." Nodding, Adeline intertwined their fingers. "Let's go."

The sun had set in the time Adeline took to change and braid her hair. The sky, now a mix of pinks and purple streaks, becomes darker as evening creeps up and the sun dips away. The many survivors crowd around, settling down as cups of water were passed around. Vince sets the firewood alight, before gaining everyone's attention.

"We have come a long way together." Vince starts. "So many have sacrificed so much to make this place possible. Your friends, and your family."

At each word, Adeline can't help but think of the ones they lost once more. Alby. Chuck. Winston. Even, Teresa.

Still can't believe I could've been one of them.

"So here's to the ones who couldn't be here. Here's to the friends we lost." Vince holds up a a chisel, motioning behind him, to where the grass met the sand, stood a rock. Each one of them raise their cups in the air. "This place is for you. It's for all of us. But this, this is for them. So, in your own time, in your own way, come make your peace. And welcome to the safe haven!"

The many survivors erupt into cheers and hollers, Newt wrapping one arm around her shoulder, the other to raise his cup in the air. The crowd of survivors crowd around the Bonfire, celebrating their newfound life and safety. Their new home, away from the dying world. They spend the next however long, celebrating. And as the night comes to an end, Minho, Gally, Frypan, Newt and Adeline commemorate their fallen friends, carving their names into the rock like the wall back in the Maze. One by one, they carve the names of their friends;

ALBY

CHUCK

WINSTON

BEN

JEFF

CLINT

ZART

JACK

More names of the fellow Gladers, the one who stayed behind, are carved into the Rock, while Aris carves a name of a fallen friend named Rachel into the rock. The one name they left Thomas to carve, was Teresa's. They left her name for Thomas, so he could make his own peace when he was ready. In his own time. Soon enough, it became close to midnight, and Adeline grows tired. Bidding her friends goodnight, Adeline heads off to the hammocks to get some shuteye. An hour or two later, Newt slips into the hammock beside her, and for the first time in a long time, Adeline gets a full nights sleep, Newt wrapping both arms around her and holding her close.

Early the next morning, as the sun has begun to rise over the ocean of the Safe Haven, Adeline awakes, wrapped in Newt's arms. Rubbing the sleep from her bleary eyes, Adeline gently removes Newt's arms from around her waist, causing the boy to shift away slightly as she swings her feet over the side of the hammock. Craning her neck, Adeline peers back at Newt, not bothering to hide the smile that twitches up at her mouth as she watches the boy finally getting some much needed sleep. Retrieving her boots and lacing them up, Adeline fixes up the bun she'd thrown her hair up into the night before, pulling it back up as she tiptoes through the hammock area, until she stops right before ocean, where dawn is breaking through the dark sky, casting the first signs of daylight as swirls of reds and oranges paint the sky. Another smile twitches up at her corners of her mouth as she remembers that this place, is her new home. At ease, Adeline wanders through the area, until she stumbles upon a familiar face. Like he use to do everyday for three years, Frypan is the first to be awake, and he leans over small fire pit, a stack of plates at his side as he stirs something in a small pot.
