Start from the beginning

"I'm not leaving him." Adeline snapped. "If anything, you go with Minho. I'll be OK with Newt."

"Adeline, if you have to move, you will barely be able to him up. He can't support his own weight." Thomas snapped, but Adeline shook her head. When she peered down at Newt, his head was lazily craned up, his eyes staring up at her, pleadingly.

"Adeline, just go with —" Newt began to cough again, and he doubled over, coughing up blackened blood. Adeline rubbed his back soothingly, but Adeline knew what the boy was trying to say. She knew that Newt didn't want her to see him getting worse, or be there when he loses all sanity and is unable to remember who his friends are, but she wasn't leaving the boy.

"I'm not leaving him." Adeline stated once more. "Thomas, just go with Minho. As you said, we don't have time. I'll be fine with him, just please listen to me. Go get the serum."

It took a moment of pleading, but Thomas finally agreed. Gally agreed to cover them, and Thomas slowly got to his feet. But, before he can do so, Newt begins to panic, his hands clasping something — a necklace — and he unclasped it from his neck.

"Wait! Wait! Take this!" Newt pleads. Thomas begins to tell him no, that he can't take it, but Newt's eyes grow dark with rage and frustration at the boys disagreement. "Take it! Please, Tommy. Please. Please, Tommy!"

At those words, Adeline feels as if her heart was ripped out of her chest. She'd never seen Newt beg like that, nor look so enraged that way. Thomas took the necklace, nodding. He got to to his feet this time, staring down at Newt. Then, he turned to Minho and Gally, who are waiting, before following after them. Adeline turned to the sick boy.

"It's OK." She promised. "As I said a few days ago, as I promised you, you're gonna be OK."

But, even as she said those words, she felt like she was lying to him. And maybe she was.

Both of them had to move. Chaos unfolded behind them. Adeline got the boy up to his feet, supporting the boy, pleading for him not to lose consciousness. But, as they tried to move away to a safer area, Newt was losing consciousness, and in turn was causing Adeline to struggle. She hauled the boy along, until they reached a courtyard of sorts, before she lost the ability to carry him, and both of them collapsed onto the ground. Adeline felt tears pricking at her eyes in what she felt to be frustration, begging mentally for them to hurry with that damn serum. Adeline clambered over toward Newt, peering down at him, begging him to come to. But, the boy was out. On her knees, distressed, Adeline threw her head back and gave a huff. The tears kept threatening to spill down her cheeks, and she didn't know how long she could them back. How long it would take for them to find them, to save Newt.

Please, hurry.

Adeline got to her feet, pacing back and forth in an overwhelming state of emotions. They were catching up to her. She'd been suppressing them away to focus on their task at hand, which was to save Minho and get that damn serum for Newt. But, in turn of doing this, it all built up and came washing over her in that moment. She cried. She cried for a good few minutes. She cried for a good few minutes, until she sensed movement before her. And when she realised that Newt had come to, she stepped forward toward the boy, who got to his feet and slowly turned to her. But, it didn't take long for her to realise that the sanity that had once managed to shine through his darkening eyes, had vanished. They were purely black, and he stared at her like he did not recognize her. He doesn't recognize me. Drool pooled from the corner of his mouth as he turned, and in that split second as he stared back at her with no recognition of who she was, Adeline felt suddenly in danger.
