Wastelands → Newt [Movie Trilogy]

→ "ALTERNATIVE ENDING"

"Newt?" She treaded lightly, hoping that maybe by hearing her voice it'd bring back some clarity to him. That he'd remember it was her, his love. But, that backfired on her, as the boy lunged at her suddenly, knocking her over. He snarled and made inhumane noises, clawing at her. In a panic, Adeline is trying to push him away. "Newt! Stop it, it's me! It's Adeline!"

The boy stops clawing and snarling at her, clarity filling his eyes. He pulls back, chest heaving heavily as he continues to pin her down to the ground. His face softens as clarity polls his eyes. He's battling with his sanity, but he's back. "I - I'm so sorry, love!"

"I — It's OK." She breathes. Her heart is ramming against her rib cage. She gets the boy off of her, who clambers on his hands and knees. She slowly manages to get to her feet, backing away. But, the boy is still on his hands and knees, and rises to his feet slowly. He stares at the concrete ground, panting. Then, that moment believing the boy had managed to stop the virus from consuming his sanity for a while, those blackened eyes meet hers again. Her hand, in a state of feeling once more in danger, goes to her gun in its holster. She holds the hilt of it, staring cautiously at him. "Newt ... it's me! Fight it. Fight —"

The boy takes off once more, knocking Adeline again to the ground. Snarling and clawing at her, she hears small breaks of pleads in between. "Kill me!" he pleads, but his eyes haven't gained any sense of clarity in between his pleading, and the time where the virus is controlling his actions. Adeline continues to scream, trying to get that clarity back in his eyes, but Newt is still clawing at her. Then, his hands yank at the gun from her holster, and Adeline knows what he's doing.

"Newt, let go!" She screams. "No!"

The boy wrestles the gun from her holster, and even with the virus controlling him, he manages to know that he has to turn the safety off. Switching the safety off, he presses the barrel of the gun to his temple, snarling the words "Kill me! Adeline, kill me!". Adeline is staring up at the boy, who is gritting his teeth with trembling fingers as he holds that gun so close. Then, when he's least expecting it, she shoves him off of her, grabbing the gun in the midst and sending it flying across the ground. Newt shoves her onto her back, his strength outweighing her, before he gets to his feet, trying to get to the skidded gun, but Adeline trips him over. She gets to her feet. But, in the midst of that, the knife from her belt loop falls and scatters onto the ground. Newt's fingers curl around the hilt of it, and he charges toward her once again. Once again, he knocks her over and tries to stab her with that knife, but misses her as she moves away. She uses every ounce of strength she has to push his arms away, to hit the knife away, but the boy has managed to find some strength after the virus caused him to feel too weak. Both roll, until Adeline manages to, in the midst of it, get to her feet. Newt's back to his feet, and Adeline spins around right as Newt swings the knife at her. She tries to shove his arms away, the knife barely missing her. He slashes at her arms, bringing blood to ooze from them. They're struggling with the weapon, Newt pleading for her to let go. But, Adeline doesn't.

Adeline doesn't realise it, but in the middle of their struggle, the boy is attempting to turn the tip of the weapon toward himself, but Adeline is pulling it away. As she finally does, nobody can stop what occurs next. With all the force of pulling it away, the blade turns, sinking into her abdomen instead. Adeline's breathing hitched and both of them freeze, realising what has just occurred. Newt's eyes clear in that moment, and for the first time in minutes, Newt manages to fight the virus away, staring at the girl before him, who's blood is seeping through her shirt. His eyes widen in realisation of what has occurred, and with the sanity he has managed to keep the virus from eating away again, he stares at the girl with grief twisting at his chest. Adeline's hand presses the area where the knife is wedged into her abdomen, her hand caked in her own blood, staring at the boy she loves with tears in her eyes.
