He stared at me. It was all too quiet. I felt like he was staring straight into my soul.
"Dr. Eyler, no one, I repeat, NO ONE. Has ever walked into my office, and demand to have a better job."
"No sir you've mis-"
He raised his hand as to silent me.
"Dr. Eyler, you've got guts. I've been waiting to see if you were going to prove your worth. I was starting to think you would never speak up."
"Wait. This whole thing was a test?"
He nodded.
This PRICK!!! I've spent my entire time here changing bed pans, as a freaking test?
"Yes, I agree it was cruel, but you are young, I wanted to make sure you were ready before throwing you into the sharks den. Please forgive me, Lilliana." He was being serious.
"Well did I pass the test?"
"With flying colors," he had a giant grin on his face. "I would like you to report to Dr. Mason and tell her that you will be under her wing for a while. I want you to have a bit more familiarity with her job before you take over."
"Take over?" I was confused. "You aren't firing her are you?" No. I couldn't just take over her job. Cecil loves her job.
"Oh lord no. Dr. Mason is one of my best doctors. I plan on moving her to the Gynecologist department. You will take over in Family Medicine when Dr. Mason thinks you are ready."
I was in awe.
"Now, now. There is no need to gawk. I do have to inform you though," his smile faded. "Much more will be required from you. Do you understand?"
"Yes sir."
"Wonderful! Since you will be changing tasks, I will have to update your schedule."
Update my schedule?
"Not to worry my dear, you will just be matching schedules with Dr. Mason. I want you to be taking over as soon as possible. I expect great things from you."
"Oh! Thank you sir." I was grinning like an idiot.
"Of course. Well, I think that sums up our meeting," he was scribbling something on a piece of paper. "go and take this to Dr. Mason. You will now be under her care until she sees fit for you take over."
I took the piece of paper and stuck it in my scrub pocket.
"Once again, thank you sir."
"Yes, you've said it many times. Go on, get. There is work to be done."
I walked out of the office and quietly shut the door behind me. I was elated. I was FINALLY going to be doing what I studied for! I half walked, half ran down the hallway to go tell Cecil the good news.
I was a ball of energy, and it wasn't from my coffee or doughnuts. It felt all to much like a dream.
COLE! I have to tell him!
I started to grab my phone but decided against it. I wanted to tell him in person. It would be more special.
"How'd it go?" I jumped and screamed at the voice behind me. Cecil was so sneaky.
"Geesh Cecil! You almost gave me a heart attack."
She snickered. She had a knack for scaring the bejesus out of people.
"Well?" She was brimming with joy, as if she knew the answer. I pulled out the paper that Dr. Pince gave me and handed it to her.
She immediately snatched it out of my hand and read it like it was her only source of hope. She squealed, making me jump again.
"My God Cecil, calm down. You are going to scare the patients." And make me wet myself. I added in my head.
"Sorry! I get to actually TRAIN you!" I didn't actually read the letter so I wasn't totally aware of what it said. I presumed it was a summary of what Dr. Pince and I talked about.
"What else does it say?" I was curious.
"It's says,
Dr. Mason,
I am pleased to tell you that you will be training Dr. Eyler in Family Medicine. I am changing her schedule to match yours as well. I want you to teach her everything you know and more. Once you think she is ready to take over in Family Medicine, come let me know. I plan on moving you to the Gynecologist department when she is ready.
-Dr. Pince""It's real. It's not just a dream." I stammered.
"No, this is very much real." Said a grinning Cecil.
