Mark walked home in the breezy evening, the weather seeming like a storm was to occur by tonight. It's a good thing he left he thought. It was dark out, the gray clouds blocking the sky.
He sped walked through the streets to make it home to Yejun sooner, hoping the small boy was okay with being alone right now. But something didn't feel right as he was now running home.
Once he spotted his home in the dark, lit up by the door light, he noticed the front door wide open which made him panic. He sprinted towards his home, grabbing a piece of wood that was laid beside his old, worn out house. He stepped inside, tip toeing and making sure he doesn't make too much noise in case someone else is actually in here.
He noticed some things out of place, some things missing, and some things broken. Mark continued looking through the house before going to Yejun's room. Chairs were knocked over in the dinning area and some food, the very little they had left, was gone.
Mark's breathing started to become uneven as he still looked through the building, checking his room, his parents room, and the bathroom before finally making his way to Yejun's room. He hoped Yejun was okay right now, opening the door slowly and looking around. He panicked when he saw no sign of his baby brother.
"Yejun? It's Mark. I'm here," Mark shakily called out, walking inside the room and stepping on something which just so happened to be the house phone Yejun was supposed to use in case something happened.
Yejun's room would have been the first place he checked, but he had to make sure nobody else was in the house first to keep his baby brother safe. Mark felt his eyes watering. He hated it. He hates crying so he sucked in his breath, regaining himself.
"Markie?" Yejun's small voice was heard from the closet, Mark quickly throwing the wood down and opening the closet door.
Though he couldn't find Yejun, but that was solved when he saw the little boy's body pop out of his toy box. Mark quickly engulfed his baby brother in his arms, pulling him out of the box as the small boy was trying not to cry since he knows Mark could not stand it.
He carried Yejun over to the front door and locked it before making their way back inside the small boy's room. Mark sat on the boy's bed with Yejun on his lap.
"Are you hurt? Are you okay? What happened?!" Mark frantically asked, checking his baby brother's body for any bruises.
"Not hurt. I was hiding," Yejun told his older brother who was still worried.
This wasn't the first time something like this has happened. But the first time, both Mark and Yejun were in the house together so the older was able to hide the both of them, keeping Yejun safe. Yejun is really smart for his age though, knowing exactly what to do when something like this were to happen.
"You're a smart boy, Yejun. I'm so glad you're okay. I'm sorry for leaving you alone," Mark apologized and the little boy only shook his head, tears threatening to fall but he wouldn't dare let that happen. He'll cry when his older brother puts him to sleep.
"I'm okay," Yejun smiled through the pain and Mark hugged the boy tightly.
Living in a house like this was never the safest to begin with. Their house was practically falling apart and it was kind of dumb how their house would be the target for break ins. Mark would have thought that it would be the houses that were well tacked together, but no. Their parents just had to buy this one because it was the cheapest. Meanwhile they have the money, but they're spending it on crap they don't need, always spending nights in hotels and leaving their children behind.
Now that Mark was thinking about it, he should have brought home food from the winter formal. But he was stupid enough to get angry at Donghyuck, who he didn't want to even think about right now, and leave right away without grabbing anything. He pulled out his phone and checked the time. There was still an hour and a half before the dance ends.
"Come on, Yejun. How about we get something to eat? Are you hungry?" Mark asked his little brother who nodded.
"Okay, go put your shoes and sweater on," Mark told him, swinging a bag over his shoulder. The older brought his younger brother back to his school, the winter formal still going on.
He didn't care if he would get in trouble for bringing outside people who are not attending the school. He held Yejun's hand tightly as they made their way to the food stand.
"Hot dog or cheese burger?" Mark questioned. "Hot dog!" Yejun said, the older pouring some ketchup onto it and handing it to the little boy who clapped in excitement.
Mark grabbed a few bags of chips and stuffed them inside his bag. He saw Yejun looking at one of the cookies so he gave one to the boy who munched on it quietly, though if he were to chew loudly, Mark couldn't really hear it because of how loud the music was. He put a few bottles of water inside his bag and the two left after they finished eating.
"Mark, he can't be here," one of the teachers chaperoning informed him.
"I know that, I'm sorry. We're leaving so if you'd please excuse me," Mark said, lifting Yejun up from the ground and carrying him back home.
Mark was just glad they made it to the school before it closed. Once they arrived home, the older helped Yejun shower while the little boy dressed himself afterwards. When they were both showered and dressed in their pajamas, the older put the little boy to bed but also squeezed himself on Yejun's tiny mattress as well.
"I know you're scared, but don't worry I'm here," Mark told the little boy whose back was faced to the older.
Mark had an arm wrapped around Yejun's tiny body while the little boy laid on his side, staring at the wall as tears fell, trying not to make a single sound.
