"That's..." Rinne opened her eyes wide. It's an enormous beast, a bear to be exact, standing around 6 or 7 meters tall. It's the largest I've ever seen in my entire life, but something's off. There's a huge crystal on its head, glowing ominously.
"A mutated one? That thing is very dangerous... " Rinne swallowed her spit. I don't know much about mutated types of beasts, but I heard they are powerful enough to shrug off unenchanted arrows and low-level magic and spirit attacks. "Don't tell me... Did it see us?." My childhood friend slowly back off absentmindedly.
I peeked once again and saw that bear is definitely looking at us then....
....!!!!??
"Leka run! O Wind Spirit! Heed my calls! Wind cutters! " Dozens of wind blades flew towards the giant mutated bear in an attempt to stop it in its tracks, but it only shrugged it off and cut off some of its thick fur in the process. Its defense abilities are amazing. However, I wasn't able to runaway because I was totally frozen in my feet. It's my first time seeing this kind of monster.
"Leka?!." I returned to my senses when the bear was only a few meters away and jumped towards us as if going for a collision course. Then a powerful force pushed me out. It was Rinne who cast wind magic, blowing me away from the boulders we formerly used as covers. The bear landed, slamming its body into the boulders and pulverizing it in the process.
The power is ridiculous. I was blown away once more. And one more time, the bear let out a loud cry. For a noise-sensitive race like elves, it felt like he was going to blow my ears off due to the sheer deafening noise.
I was disoriented by that, but I could see the bear was creeping towards me. Slowly baring it's fangs filled with mouthful of saliva on me. I tried to run, but my legs aren't listening at all. No matter what I do, they aren't moving. Fear palpated, my heart beat faster, my eyes were about to cry, and I felt I leaked due to fear.
The beast looks like an intelligent one because it looks like it's having fun tormenting us, its prey.
"S-stay away!" I shouted, but it was still slowly approaching to gnaw on me. However, it was interrupted. "Get away from her, you beast!"
A shower of wind magic flew towards the bear, aiming at its head, hitting one of its eyes. It let out a painful cry after getting wounded and directed its attention in the other direction, where my childhood friend was casting another spirit magic.
"Run Rinne! Leave me alone!." But Rinne didn't do that and instead looked at the bear with a determined look as dozens of wind blades began to manifest at her side.
Graaaaaoooo!
The Bear mercilessly closed the distance, but a hail of wind magic greeted it, but, as usual, it didn't do any great damage to the monster. It raised its paws and slammed into the ground where Rinne was standing, but she evaded it.
"O' WIND SPIRIT! Air Javelins! "
Four massive winds swirling in Rinne's left hand flew towards the monster, but as an intelligent monster, it sensed the danger and evaded most of them. However, one hit and pierced through its fur but not deep enough to cause fatal damage.
She did it! But I immediately noticed Rinne was already exhausted from overusing wind spirits in battling that monster, making me pale in realization. She was heavily panting due to severe exhaustion.
"......!? O wind spirit! Heed my call! Wi---!." I tried to help Rinne, but I cowered when the bear looked at me. However, unlike me, Rinne was still determined to fight as she cast another wind spell in her tattered state. "O wind spirit! Air javelin!."
Making the bear wary, but unlike before, she could only manifest one air javelin. It's clear that she had enough but pushed her body beyond its limits.
The tranquility of splashing water and chirping birds, the only things we could only hear. It felt peaceful, but the heavy and tense atmosphere is choking us right now.
The bear finally moves to attack Rinne after feeling it was too long and made a frontal assault, but it was a feint as it was still wary of the air javelin of Rinne, who might be thinking of using it as a last resort point blank attack intended to take it down together with her.
Due to the near impossible guard of Rinne, the bear looks like it gave up on her and instead... slowly directs its glance to me.
....!
"Leka what are you doing! RUN!."
I fell onto the floor due to fear, and my childhood friend is shouting at me. It's all my fault! My fault! I'm going to die...
"You don't you dare! " Rinne began to run to the monster to stop it, but she was too slow, and once again the death door creeps in front of me and it stands, revealing its massive stature to me, a symbol of fear.
Then several bursts of blood came forth from its body, as if something had attacked it with wind magic. However, I can't feel any magic induction other than Rinne's arms or small animals nearby. What's happened? Then a sound of something unfamiliar, as if insects were flying around, resonates in the surroundings. No, it's already been there, but I didn't notice due to tension and nervousness.
The bear was wounded but still had the strength to move. It should have been fatal because I saw as many as five splurts of blood unless they weren't deep enough to cause fatal damage.
Graaaaaoooo!!!!
Letting out cry of hatred. It gazed upon that unknown thing that was hovering in the woods. It's not flapping as it doesn't have wings, but there's something odd above it. Not only that, it looks like it's not living, but another noticeable thing about it is that there are several humanoids clinging no... It was sitting on the side.
The mutated bear frantically ran towards them with clear hostile intention, but that unknown thing faced the monster, and then something interrupted and an unexplainable burst of alien sounds reverberated.
BRRRRRRRRRRRRRTTTTT!!!!
The bear was hit by countless lights, piercing through, kicking up dust and pulverizing it in the process. Only half of its body remained intact in that fierce assualt of unknown attack.
This day, I witnessed an out-of-this-world attack, a display of strength that the natives of this world cannot create or imitate, and anyone who dares to confront it will be annihilated. Just like what happened to this mutated bear.
The unknown thing descended on the river with several humans who helped us from our predicament. They also took care of Rinne, who temporarily lost consciousness due to extreme exhaustion, and they delivered us directly to our village, much to our surprise.
