Tannenberg Naval Base serves as the headquarters of the Eastern Sanctium Imperial Navy Force, overseeing the empire’s eastern colonies and territories. Tasked with patrolling southern waters to counter smuggling and piracy, it also plays a key role in policing occupied lands. The base is home to a large naval fleet, including 11 battleships and battlecruisers, 22 cruisers, 51 destroyers, 16 submarines, dozens of torpedo boats, and nearly a hundred support vessels.
Despite its size, the base does not house aircraft carriers, as the region is well-covered by numerous airbases and airstrips. Instead, its fleet focuses on securing the enclosed seas and the neighboring continent. Within the Sanctium Navy, only the Western, Northern, Southern, Capital Defense, and Regional Response Fleets operate carriers. However, the Eastern Fleet has the second-highest concentration of gun-armed capital ships, surpassed only by the Western Fleet.
Located next to the city of Tannenberg, the base supports a growing urban center of approximately 500,000 residents. The city’s skyline is gradually modernizing, with new skyscrapers under construction. Currently peaceful and stable, Tannenberg boasts one of the highest standards of living in the region, supported by two major automotive manufacturing plants and a developing aviation industry. It serves as a core hub for the Holy Sanctium Empire’s expansion into neighboring continents.
The heavy rhythm of urgent footsteps echoed through the headquarters as a man in the rank of commodore strode purposefully through the halls. "Make way!" he commanded. Startled personnel stepped aside immediately, recognizing his insignia. Reaching a door, he took a breath before knocking firmly.
“This is Commodore Revjak, Admiral. I have urgent news from the west,” he announced.
“Enter.”
Without hesitation, Revjak stepped inside, saluted sharply, and delivered his report.
“Admiral, the two destroyers that went missing three days ago have been confirmed sunk.”
The fleet admiral, a man of 50 with a receding hairline, adjusted his monocle as he lifted his eyes from the documents in hand.
“Sunk? By what?”
“Lights, sir—or at least that’s what the surviving crew reported,” Revjak replied, placing a written report on the admiral’s desk.
“Tracers? Illumination rounds?” the admiral mused, setting down his paperwork.
“Nothing confirmed. Both ships were attacked and sunk simultaneously. Only 17 survivors were found clinging to rafts and debris. Reconnaissance aircraft reported spotting an oil slick at the site, but no radar signatures were detected before the attack.”
The admiral frowned. “No radar detection? That’s… quite the coincidence.”
“Indeed, sir. The radar systems around the area failed at the exact moment of their sinking. Headquarters has ordered a change in deployment strategy—no more single or paired deployments. All vessels should operate in squadrons with at least one cruiser as a core. Additionally, aerial patrols will be increased to identify the attackers.”
The admiral leaned back, deep in thought. “An unknown force capable of sinking two destroyers unnoticed… Could it be remnants of Callusia’s ironclads? No, they wouldn’t have the speed to catch destroyers, let alone pose a serious threat.” He shook his head before turning back to Revjak. “Understood. I’ll reorganize the fleet and recall any lone ships immediately. Will that be sufficient?”
“Yes, Admiral,” Revjak replied with a respectful nod before turning to leave.
As the door closed behind him, the admiral remained seated, staring at the report. He exhaled slowly, then picked up his pen.
