So, who were they? There was no governor on the side of Kashim either, nor on the side of Valur. No governor would meddle in territories they don't own, and Mineas was not even remotely a country. Probably this governor was not your typical rank or position, it must be something else, thought Leticia, as her brain raced through every possible answer.
Seeing her, probably overthinking, the person soon grabbed something from his pocket and presented it to them. "Is this enough for you to understand we're not remotely hostile, other than the two factions here, 'Valur and their affiliated thugs,' and all sorts of criminals in the vicinity?" he said as he raised a pendant that only a few could possess. It was a golden one with the unmistakable arts of high elves embroidered on it. It was a pendant of trust, only given to ambassadors, higher-ranking officials, and kings and rulers of members of the Kashim Continental Alliance. On top of that, it was an extremely valuable item, not just because of the gold coating, but what shone the brightest was the unmistakable luster of a mithril core inside.
"Why do you have that!?" The calm demeanor of Leticia soon exploded in seconds, even surprising Nive in response.
"Why? Because, as I said, we're friends with folks in Mineas, right? And if not because of this, I would probably order your slaughter without a question," he said to them as their senses jerked in surprise.
"What! You bastard!" Nive soon guards Leticia, as the escorts of the person in front of them do the same, their guns facing against Leticia.
"Well, if not because you don't have one in your hands, too, right missy?" He said as Leticia herself grabbed her pendant on her chest, and opened it up. It's much smaller, but the undeniable striking similarities are evident, and it's glowing light as they close triggered the attraction between mithrills that resulted in this reaction.
"The elves said if you have these, it means you're friendly, unless it's captured, but it appears not to be the case in your situation. Also, it's easy to know the other party has these, as they glow in reaction when you came close to similar pendants due to some unknown phenomenon that we're still researching how it's possible," he said to them. "And lastly, I assume you can speak Alreian?" he said to them.
"High Alreian? Yes, but only a little, as those are exclusive for high elves only, and those selected few who have the higher honor to get a bigger pendant that signifies their relationship with high elven tribes in Mineas. It's so sparse, only a few hundred people in my country could speak it," she said to him. Soon, a confused expression appeared on the other party's face.
"High elves?" he said to them, "Isn't that person an elf too? So he's an high elf too" He said in confusion as he pointed to the elf on Leticia's side, who had shorter ears and a noticeable skin tone and hair color more human than a pure elven race.
"No, he's just an elf, a hybrid human-elf on top of that, so he can't speak Alreian," Leticia replied for clarification to the person in front of her, who seemed increasingly confused by the conversation.
Before long, he finally understood what was amiss. "Let me check, appears there's some difference in our vocabulary and dictionary. That person over there, your fellow, is not a high elf, right?" He said to everyone as he pointed a finger at the half-elf, half-human comrades of the other party, and Nive and Leticia nodded. "And you called elves in Mineas high elves for some unknown reason? Can I ask why?" He said to them.
"Because they're pure elves and a higher species with cue on the very word Alreia, means literally 'Higher Species or Race'. Only high elves can cast magic chantless, other ancient arts, and one of the few races capable of using spirit magic and rituals, and can live over 500 years. The low elves, or normal elves and hybrids, mostly can live up to a hundred years like humans outside of Mineas but with higher Mana reserve or mastery of magic over humans but extremely inferior to high elves. Mostly against pure elves in Mineas, they're so extremely scarce, seeing one alive high elf in Mineas is like a 1 in 1 million chance in the lifeline of humans," Leticia said to them.
"Hmm, we learned a lot here, and there's a need to calibrate our dictionary, huh?" He said to them, contemplating the information he had just heard. Leticia waited for the next person's words. "I am Captain Will, 27th Rapid Reaction Battalion, Legrand Army, tasked to wipe out bandits and Valur-affiliated groups in the vicinity and recapture all Mineas natives, as per the request of elven tribal chiefs friendly to our region, and return them back to their villages and homes if there's still remaining one," he said to them. "Can I ask for your name and affiliation? We would like to have a friendly relationship with you if you wish to kick Valurian ass to kingdom come; we would appreciate it," he said. Everyone, including Leticia and Nive, digested what they had just heard.
And thus, the first encounter between Kashim and Cignus has finally transpired.
