"Guess we're slowly returning back to normal," said a satisfied officer. Soon after, a mass formation of F/A-1 Falcon aircraft, resembling smaller Su-27s but equipped with twin ducted fan engines instead of jet engines, soared through the sky at a cumbersome speed of 280 kph. They strafed the surface, firing their 1 14.7mm guns in short bursts before dropping their 2 100-pound bombs and breaking off, resulting in several underwhelming explosions on the ground.
Following them, their larger counterparts, the full-fledged attack version A-2 Flanker, flew by. These aircraft were longer and larger, almost resembling a MiG-29 in size and silhouette, and can cause confusion among unfamiliar onlookers about difference between MiG-29 or Su-27. Flying at full throttle at barely 250 kph, they strafed the surface with their 2 7.62mm GPMG class self-defense guns and dropped their payload of 14x 100-pound bombs from their underbellies. Over a hundred bombs exploded, carpet-bombing the surface below. After lightening their load, they accelerated away at a breakneck speed of 330 kph, albeit in a sluggish manner compared to the F/A-1 Falcons.
"Flankers are faster than Falcons when they unloaded their bombs, carry more payload, but have less range and maneuverability compared to Falcons," remarked one of them. Surprisingly, in just 7 years of development, their speed has tripled from the initial 100 kph design.
Despite their ability to carry heavier payloads, they still require specialized units for their tasks. Falcons excel in dogfighting due to their fighter optimized design, but they must sacrifice this capability when carrying heavy loads for ground attack missions. On the other hand, Flankers are larger to accommodate it's role as attack aircrafts - adding armor and fuselage strengthening, significantly improving safety and survivability. An unarmored Flanker can reach speeds of up to 450 kph, but risks catastrophic structural failures if its armor or heavy structural support braces is stripped off. Currently, a long-range fighter version of Flankers is being developed and is expected to replace Falcons in service.
"His Excellency is very eager for their deployment and mass production; a lot of resources have been focused throughout the year to deploy them in numbers. Now, we have enough to deploy them throughout the country," remembering how Oliver's investment in rapid development and production, enough to field three squadrons in just five years since the first prototype.
"Yes, we can achieve air supremacy even with these inferior versions of our jets."
"Once we acquire an adequate number of Flankers and Falcons, it seems we'll be shifting our deployment focus to transport aircraft."
"It seems to be a Cessna 208 version; we were hoping for a C-130 version, but no one in the research department is discussing it."
"We can't complain - we're just end users, not developers," sighed another.
51st Federal Guard
A unit of the Southern Palus Federal Guard Division, or rather their camp, bustled with activity. A half-elf, Regor, a Kashim spy reassigned from Valur due to the massive threat Cignus now posed, surveyed the equipment and routines around him. The military exercises provided an opportune cover for his infiltration, as the integration of several hundred unfamiliar units had created some confusion. However, his expectations of traditional military drills-firing weapons and attacking enemy positions-were quickly dashes away.
Instead, he found himself digging ditches and trenches all day, eating, marching, running daily five-kilometer runs, getting yelled at constantly, and facing inspections or punishments for even minor mistakes. He hadn't even been allowed to fire his gun. The officers were relentless, forcing them to cook primitively, using river rocks and slabs, bamboos, clay or leaves, which resulted in food that was stale, mud vomiting earthly taste, tasteless, or burnt.
