***Flash back***
Snake walked into Mist's den. "Father, where's Bee?" he hadn't seen his father's littermate all day.
Mist briefly paused. He turned to Snake. "Bee wasn't strong enough."
Snake swore his voice almost broke. "What do you mean?"
Mist didn't respond.
Snake started crying. "Why do you have to kill everyone?!" he wailed.
"You'll understand when you're older." Mist replied.
Snake's fur bushed up in anger. "No I won't! I refuse to! I'll be better than you! I hate you!"
Mist whipped around. "Leave!"
"Gladly! None of the other parents are this mean to their kits! I'm only three moons old!" Snake ran out of the den.Snake wasn't assigned to a patrol. He thought he would be happy about it. But he wasn't. It was strange.
Maybe I've just gotten used to having a terrible time. Snake reasoned.
"Hi Snake!" Tiny Branch ran over to him.
Well I guess there's an upside. Snake looked down at Tiny Branch. "Hello Tiny Branch."
Tiny Branch wiggled his hind quarters and jumped, and then flopped back onto the ground.
Snake purred. "You're getting better."
Tiny Branch shot to his paws, his tail waving excitedly. "Really?!"
"Of course." Snake nodded approvingly.Snake was sitting outside his den. The kits were busy pestering Thunder, so he was bored.
***Flash back***
Snake looked at his paw. "So. . . Why wasn't I marked the first time I was in your group?"
One Eye sighed. "Snake I can't favor you anymore. You're not a kit anymore."
Snake bit back a sharp retort. He was not about to insult one of the few cats that cared about him. "I haven't been a kit for moons." he pointed out.
"You know what I meant." One Eye whisked his tail and stalked off.
Snake rolled onto his back. He looked at the mark Mist had given him. "Why is Mist's mark an x through a line?" he asked out loud.Snake was looking at the mark on his hind leg again. It always reminded him of that memory. He missed One Eye sometimes.
"How'd you get that mark?"
Snake looked up at Thorn. "Remember how I told you about Mist?"
Thorn nodded.
"He gave it to me." Snake explained.
Thorn sat down beside Snake. "And I thought my parents were bad. . ."
Snake shrugged. "I guess we all have something bad about our kit-hood."
Thorn nodded.
Snake tipped his head. "Why did you come over here?" he asked in his normal tone.
"Well I figured it wouldn't be suspicious anymore. I don't want to look suspicious. However, now it'll just look like I'm taking pity on you." Thorn half laughed.
"Ah so pitiful. My friend is talking to me." Snake joked.
"Good, my plan worked, you aren't being a sad little cat." Thorn flicked his tail, he had a smug look on his face.
Snake huffed and rolled his eyes. "You are ridiculous."
Thorn shrugged. "I just don't like you being upset." his voice became serious.
Snake smiled, Thorn was a good friend. He was always so caring. "Thanks."
Thorn looked confused. "For what?"
"For caring about me." Snake answered warmly.
Thorn looked a little embarrassed. "It's nothing, what are friends for?" he then looked even more embarrassed. "Oh that was so stupid to say."
Snake laughed. "Oh come on, I've said worse." he tried to assure him.
Thorn slightly shook his head. "Probably. . . But I've said worse than that."
Snake started purring. He hadn't purred in a long time. Purring felt nice. It was so much better than being spiteful.A cat was watching the two toms. Why do I feel so jealous? This can't be jealousy. No. No this can't be jealousy. That doesn't make any sense. The cat shook their head. Things were becoming very strange.
