Snake was even more confused than ever before. In the two moons he had stayed with SkyClan, his urge to kill Clear Sky had completely left him.
I just don't understand why. . . I hate Clear Sky! Snake was finding it harder and harder to keep lying to himself.
"We need to think about what Slash is going to do next!"
Snake looked up. Good, a distraction.
Lightning Tail walked over to Thunder. "I agree. We don't know what his next move will be. It's been two moons. . ."
Clear Sky didn't respond for awhile. Then eventually he spoke. "I understand why you're concerned but we haven't seen any sign of Slash or his rouges for two moons." he clearly was making an effort not to snap at the two toms.
Snake stood up. "If we aren't looking for Slash we won't be ready for an attack."
"We are ready for an attack." Clear Sky replied dryly.
This is what I mean. He's getting nicer to me. I swear. Snake remarked silently.
"Yes. I'm not saying we aren't. But I'm worried about the kits. . . Star Flower is probably going to try to steal them. If Slash gets us off guard for even a second. . ." Snake could feel himself choking up. He was so strongly attached to those kits. Even the thought of them getting hurt pained him.
He could tell some cats were giving him weird looks, Leaf in particular.
He even heard Nettle whisper, "Clear Sky is not going to like that." to Blossom.
Clear Sky stared at Snake. A silent question in his eyes. Snake wasn't quite sure what the question was. "Snake, I understand your concern," that sounded genuine. "But the kits haven't even left camp before."
Snake nodded. "Right. . ." he sat back down, cursing himself for speaking up.

"Hey, I appreciate you speaking up."
Snake looked up. "It was nothing." he assured Thunder.
"But it was something. Not many cats would risk their membership of the group like you did." Thunder insisted.
Snake shrugged. "I don't really have anything to lose. Except being in the same group as my father and sister anyway."
Thunder blinked in confusion. "You have kin here?"
Snake nodded. "Yeah, Pink Eyes and Blossom."
Thunder padded away.
Snake felt eyes on him and descretly turned.
Leaf and Quick Water were talking about him.
"Well I just want to know when he's getting kicked out again." Leaf whispered to Quick Water.
Quick Water nodded. "He weakens the group. Maybe other cats with limps don't. But he certainly does."
Leaf scoffed. "And to top it all off he's a queer."
Wow. You used my romantic preferences as an inult. I'm so sad. Snake rolled his eyes.
Quick Water looked disgusted. "He can't even have kits?!"
Funny thing. I have a son. His name's Ember. And he's adopted. I can have kits. Old fool. Snake only used her age to insult her because of how annoying she was. He had been raised by some very lovely older cats.
Leaf nodded, sharing Quick Water's disgust.
Snake was distracted from the two wastes of oxygen when the kits rushed over to him.
Tiny Branch was ahead of his sisters, he looked excited. "We're going to have a jumping contest!" he announced.
Snake purred. "Oh really?"
Dew Petal joined Tiny Branch's side. "Yes! And you're going to be the judge!"
Snake purred louder. "I'm honoured."
Flower Foot joined her littermates. "Why? You're the coolest cat. Of course you get to do the coolest things." she replied matter-of-factly.
Snake purred even louder. These kits were so precious.
"Alright you all ready?" Flower Foot turned back to her littermates.
Tiny Branch let out an excited squeal. Dew Petal wiggled her hind quarters in anticipation.
Flower Foot nodded. She crouched down in preparation to leap.
"Alright. . ." Snake paused to build suspence. "Now!"
The three kits immediately leaped into the air, Tiny Branch had the weakest jump, he almost immediately landed right back down, however he did have a little longer in the air than before. Dew Petal on the other paw, having a genetical advantage -being Clear Sky's daughter- leaped gracefully into the air. However it was Flower Foot that jumped the highest, not very graceful, but very high. She leaped three whole tail lengths higher than Dew Petal.
"Well done all three of you." Snake praised. "Flower Foot, you jumped the highest. Dew Petal that was a very graceful leap, I can tell you'll be a great hunter. And Tiny Branch, your leap is getting better. You'll get it perfect in no time."
Flower Foot bounced excitedly. "I did it! I'm going to tell Dad!" she rushed off to find Clear Sky.
Dew Petal basked in his praise. "I'll be the best hunter this forest has ever seen!" she vowed, before also rushing off.
Tiny Branch looked up at Snake, his tail whisking back and forth. "When I get old enough I want you to be my mentor." he declared.
Snake was confused. "What?"
Tiny Branch looked pleased he knew something Snake didn't. "It's a new thing the clans are doing. When kits get old enough they are being assigned mentors. I want you to be my mentor." he informed Snake.
Sounds like what Pink Eyes and One Eye did. The two toms would swap kits for the day to train them occasionally. It was a pretty smart concept.
"I'd like to be your mentor." Snake told Tiny Branch.
The small brown and white tom jumped with joy. "Yay! I'll tell my Dad I want you to be my mentor!" and then he too, rushed away.
Snake sighed. Clear Sky would never let him mentor one of his kits. But it was still fun to think about. He would play with the kits all the time, in fact. . . He was pretty sure Clear Sky would leave them with Snake on purpose.
Something is going on with that cat. I don't understand what. But somethings happening.

Snake's mind had finally decided it was sick of Snake's foolishness that night. He couldn't fall asleep. Apparently his mind was forcing him to admit something to himself.
I don't know what's wrong with me! Sometimes I just can't sleep because I'm thinking about Clear Sky! It's stupid! I can't believe I li-hate him this much! Snake immediately cursed himself.
After a while Snake just sighed and sunk into his nest. He couldn't keep denying it any longer. He liked Clear Sky. . . More than just platonically. But who cared?! Clear Sky hated him! So why did it matter?!
I guess this is one of the reasons I despise Star Flower.
Thinking of Star Flower reminded Snake of one of his favorite memories. . . The only good memory with Star Flower in it actually.

***Flash back***
Snake huffed. Star Flower had interrupted the game he and Moon Petal were playing.
Moon Petal flicked his tail. "She-cats are so annoying!" some of his words still sounded a little weird. But he was only four moons old, as was Snake, so it made sense.
Snake batted Moon Petal with his tail. "No Star Flower just sucks." he corrected.
Star Flower stuck her tail up indignantly. "No! You suck!"
Crystal Eye bolted over. "No, Snake's cool!" she protested.
"Yeah!" Moon Petal walked over to Crystal Eye.
Star Flower glared at her littermates. "W-well you guys are bad too!"
Crystal Eye shrugged. "Sounds like you're coping, for kind of being terrible."
Star Flower stalked away.

Snake laughed at the memory. It was a good one.

"I just don't get it! Why do I keep staring at him?" The grey tom exclaimed.
The golden tabby sighed. "I'm pretty sure you have a crush on him."
"But he's a tom!" The grey tom cried.
"Yes. . . And? It's called being queer." The golden tabby shook his head disappointedly.
The grey tom stared at the tabby. "T-that's allowed?"
"You are litterally the one who makes the rules!" The tabby was exasperated.
"Shush!" The grey tom stalked off.
The tabby laughed a little. "Huh. I thought mountain cats couldn't get any werider."
