Vol. 2 Chapter 10

Start from the beginning

"Her?" I replied, trying to recall as I glanced at the girl in question. "If my memory serves me right, that’s the daughter of the Corrupted Saint from 18 years ago."

"Corrupted Saint?" Lord Oliver asked, his curiosity piqued.

"Yes," I continued, "A summoned human from another world. She was said to be the daughter of a goddess sent to save humanity from demons that were prophesied to destroy Pandora—our world."

"What a load of bullshit," Oliver replied, his tone tingling with indifference, his bluntness almost shocking but not entirely unexpected.

I found myself agreeing. "It’s all confined to their texts, really. Most of us believe the supposed summoning or transfer of her mother was a fabrication—just propaganda."

Lord Oliver seemed somewhat disappointed by my words. "Do you find the claim of summoning or the story of the Corrupted Saint interesting?" I asked, sensing his interest.

"In a way," he said in a low voice, almost as if speaking to himself. "I believe it’s possible, to some extent."

"Oh," I responded, unsure how to interpret his vagueness.

"Magic exists," he continued with a shrug. "Things like conjuring fire or water out of thin air—things that shouldn’t be possible, but are. So, summoning people from another world? That doesn’t seem far-fetched to me."

"Then, do you believe in their gods?" I asked, curious about his perspective.

"I don’t believe their gods exist," Lord Oliver said flatly. "If they did, this country would be the center of the world, considering their gods supposedly send their 'daughters' here only for them to be labeled 'Corrupted Saints.' It’s an utter load of horse shit."

"Hmm, then, Saint Lisa must have been an unfortunate soul..." I started, only to be immediately cut off by Lord Oliver.

"Lisa?" he said, his voice rough and eyes narrowing as they locked onto me, sharp as daggers.

I froze for a moment. "The thing is..." I attempted to explain, but his gaze seemed to be darkening into something far more unexplainable ominous glint. It was as if I were staring into a void—a gaze of abyss that threatened to swallow me whole.

My breath caught, and the pressure in the air became almost unbearable. My pulse quickened, pounding in my ears. Sweat began to bead on my skin, a cold trickle running down my spine. I couldn’t understand why I was feeling this way. In all my years of diplomatic missions, nothing had ever made me feel this cornered, this fearful.

It was as if an invisible daggers hovering just above my throat, waiting to thrust to reap my life. The silence between us was suffocating, and I struggled to keep my composure as that overwhelming presence of pressed down on me.

"Speak, Sir Laxur," he uttered to me. "Why did you stop?" He tilted his head in curiosity. Why, why are you looking at me that way? It seems normal, but why is it so suffocating, so threatening, so ominous? I almost shouted in fear.

"Eighteen years ago, we heard news of them announcing the arrival of the daughter of the goddess."

"And then?" The glint in his eyes reminded me of something. Is this why the crown princess said not to look into Lord Oliver’s eyes when he's... I see.

"We didn’t really care. We were at war with Kashim, suffering heavy losses, and dealing with internal disputes. We had no time to focus on these religious fanatics claiming the descent of the goddess's daughter, who was only capable of healing. She posed no tangible threat to the Valur Empire at the time, so we left them alone." I uttered, squeezing all of my strength into those lines.
