“No, just the three of us will suffice. I have some private matters to discuss with him as well.”
“At least take a maid with you.”
“I’ve had enough of this conversation,” she said, looking at me. “Your Excellency, I trust the room is ready for us to enter?”
“Of course,” I answered, addressing everyone on her side. “And Leo,” I added, looking at my own men. Leo nodded in acknowledgment. “No eavesdropping, and no rude, watchful eyes on the room. Is that understood?”
“Yes, I understand,” Leo replied, surprisingly compliant. I had expected him to protest the escort.
Turning to the Sanctium side, I said, “Considering I have guns,” and I drew my pistol. “You can allow the princess to bring her guns inside. If something happens, she should be able to shoot me if I have malicious intent, shouldn’t she?”
“Pardon?” one of Lisa’s escorts asked, his tone more rough despite his polite words. “The princess isn’t trained to use firearms.”
“Guess I’ll leave it,” I said, removing the magazine, cocking it once, and unloading the chamber before handing it over to my escorts. “Is that sufficient?” I asked, and they nodded reluctantly.
“Please, this way,” I smiled, leading them toward the room a few steps away. At the door, my escort and the Sanctium side watched us with concern. “Don’t provoke them, Leo,” I said softly. He nodded. Lizette also gave a subtle wave, signaling the same instruction to her side, and they nodded back, though reluctantly. I slowly closed the door behind us, sighed as it clicked shut, and locked it. Then I turned to face them, only to see Lisa suddenly leap into my embrace.
I couldn’t see her face as she clung to me, but I could tell she was sobbing lightly.
I stood frozen, unsure of what to do. What was happening? My gaze shifted to Cecily, who was patting her head while pointing to Lisa. Was that a cue for me to do the same? Hesitantly, I patted Lisa’s head. “It’s okay,” I murmured softly.
The situation lasted for almost a minute before she slowly pulled away, her face streaked with tears, her eyes slightly red. I gently guided her to a seat.
Upon sitting, she began saying, “I’m so sorry, I’m sorry, Oliver, sorry.” in hysteria as face loomed with guilt.
“Hey, calm down,” I replied awkwardly, “If they bust in here and hear their princess crying, a war might break out.” What was happening? Why was she apologizing? My mind was in chaos. I was happy to see my former crush, the one who had rejected me, I thought dead but alive and now a princess. But this was getting awkward.
I immediately shot my standard protocol when I can't understand the situation.
Polygraph Assessment: Repentance, Self loathe, and Guilt for your perceived death due to her rejection.
Wait, what?
I think I died by accident... I ain't no way to commit suicide before I was... No way… Maybe she misunderstood my death as suicide after rejecting me?!
Oh, fuck.
I glanced at Cecily, who tilted her head, as if to say she's clueless, Can’t you see this is a whole level of misunderstanding?! You can read minds, right? Say something to your mother!
I felt a headache coming on as I glimpsed the situation. I couldn’t… Fuck, she didn’t do anything wrong! I died by accident! I don’t know why I couldn’t say it, but something terrible felt like it would happen if I told her she misunderstood everything. I sighed. I’ve been a pretentious pathological liar for the last seven years, so I won’t be bothered lying to her face. At least I can mitigate her unjustified guilt. I placed my hands over her trembling ones and said, “I forgive you, there’s nothing to worry about. Just look to the future.” Wait, what the hell am I saying!? It’s the first time in a while that I’m panicking inside. Fuck, I want to bang my head against the wall.
