Alvin sat in the detention room with Brittany, who gave him dagger looks from time to time. He could not be bothered by her murdering him with her eyes. Life fighting with Brittany every day was getting a bit boring. It was the same old friend and enemy relationship all the time.

At times, Alvin wondered why he was even a wee bit attracted to Brittany. It was clear that she hated him, but there were also hints that she possibly liked him. Why was she such a complicated girl? Why couldn't she be more like Jeanette, straight to the point?

Alvin was not sure if Jeanette was aware of it herself, but it was clear to him that she probably had feelings for his little brother who was more mature than him. He noticed how Simon was always the first Jeanette would approach to confide in, indicating she gave her huge trust to Simon. It could be merely because they were best friends, but there was just something about the two of them that gave Alvin the vibe that she liked his brother but was just shy to admit it.

Well, at least they got along. Alvin had to cover up his attraction to Brittany whenever she challenged him because challenge seemed like the only way he could try to impress her.

Alvin wanted to escape, but he could not carry out his plan with Brittany in the way. Brittany would surely make a comeback, if the teacher ever fell for his trick of being too annoying to be in detention, that might change her mind.

Alvin just wanted some space away from the drama with Brittany. It was getting really tiring. He needed to be with a friend unlike her. He wanted someone the exact opposite of Brittany. And of course, Jeanette popped into his head.

But then again, there are some things he disliked about Jeanette. Jeanette was clumsy, and at times, weird! She was absolutely gullible for a high school student, despite her great academic intelligence that was questionable. She was smart, but not so smart as well. How could someone so smart be so naive?

Then again, it was adorable how she would believe all those simple tricks despite being such a smart girl in her academics. Despite being an accident-prone, she was also wise, and was the best adviser he has ever known. Even when her suggested solutions seemed ridiculous, they turned out to be the best decisions in the end. She was a great listener, and Simon was extremely lucky to have a best friend like her.

Alvin groaned in his seat in boredom, awaiting torturously for detention to end, wondering what Simon and Jeanette were doing specifically at the library.

"There it is. Here. It's a story about friendship." Simon handed the library book to Jeanette as they walked down the book shelves.

"It looks good." Jeanette read the description at the back of the book.

"Thanks Simon." She smiled sweetly at Simon.

"I-It's not a big deal really, j-just thought it would look, interesting to you." Simon nervously scratched the back of his head, grinning sheepishly at Jeanette.

Jeanette looked away shyly, finding his shyness around her adorable. Simon was usually confident, but at times he seemed to be shy around her. She was also flattered that he would even think of her on a regular day at the public library upon noticing a book of her interest.

"Over here, we can do our homework together." Simon gestured towards a conducive corner in the library.

They both unpacked their bags, sitting opposite each other. Whenever the two of them were alone, they both felt the lovely tingles, but what a typical cliche that they thought of their feelings as one-sided.

Simon was partially convinced he had a crush on Jeanette, but assumed it was just a passing by infatuation that would not last very long. It was quite amusing by the fact that he has told himself the same theory for almost two human years.

Jeanette on the other hand was not sure at all about how she felt towards Simon. All she could establish was that her best friend had a huge impact on her life, and she would feel incomplete without him. She was not sure if those were the traits of a strong friendship, or having a crush.

Nevertheless, they both were certain the other party had no interest in them. They never dwelled much on the problem though, but instead pushed their feelings to the back of their minds. All that mattered was that they were friends no matter what, and obviously they could not risk the chance to make things awkward if they ever discussed about their feelings with each other.

Simon could not help but feel distracted by Jeanette doing her Literature homework. He admired how she had a way with flowery language, so beautiful like her. Many may not see her beauty past her glasses and clumsiness, but he found her traits extremely adorable.

Sure she looked good without glasses, but she still looked just the same to him with them on. He always felt the need to be her knight in shining armour whenever she needed help. However, obviously she regarded him as a best friend and nothing more, or at least that was what he thought.

Jeanette sensed eyes on her and looked up, catching him zoning out on her. Simon immediately snapped back to reality and blinked his eyes, and Jeanette smiled casually, causing him to grin back nervously in response. Embarrassed that he was caught looking at her, Simon looked down to concentrate on his Physics homework.

Jeanette giggled silently, a blush creeping in her cheeks. She glanced at Simon, who was now focused on his science homework. She admired his high IQ just north of Einstein, his intelligence far greater than anyone else she knew. If she were honest with herself, she secretly thought of Simon as a perfect boy.

He was super smart, but that was what everyone only saw in him. He was much more than that. He was a sweet and modest boy, caring and respectful gentleman, a highly witty chipmunk with humorous sarcasm that could make her laugh all day, and secretly strong. No one probably noticed, but he was in fact one with muscles, being the one to always carry Jeanette or catch her when she would fall. He was literally the whole package.

Others may have found Simon to be boring, but she could listen to his stories all day, whether it was rumoured or true. Simon was such a rational person, but he would not go with harsh truths to the people he loved. He'd let them down gently, and that caring personality of his truly intrigued her.

After they both finished their homework, they slowly strolled home together, talking about life.

"Well, we're here." Simon looked at their neighbouring houses.

"Bye Simon. It was nice hanging out at the library." Jeanette smiled at him.

"I could say the same thing Jeanette." Simon waved as Jeanette walked to her treehouse.

The both of them entered their homes, feeling very satisfied for the day.
