"She's going with me." Simon blurted out.
"What?" Alvin blinked in shock at the news.
He burst into fits of laughter, slapping his knee in amusement.
"That's really really funny Simon, but seriously, who is she going with?" Alvin asked, wiping a tear away.
Simon kept a straight face, convincing Alvin.
"You're not... Joking?" Alvin asked in disbelief.
"You don't look like you're telling a joke." He pointed at Simon's facial expression.
"I'm fully aware that I don't have your face, Alvin." Simon remarked wittily, carrying on walking on the sidewalk.
"I don't get it." Theodore responded to Simon's sarcasm, walking after him.
"You're serious?!" Alvin raised his voice, catching up with them.
"Do I have to repeat myself?" Simon glared at Alvin.
"Well," Alvin chuckled, "at least I can go to the dance with Jeanette and Brittany won't be as annoying since she already has a date."
Simon's jaw dropped, his blood boling. Alvin was so blind! How could he not tell that Brittany was this desperate for his attention?
"I can't believe you're so selfish and insensitive. You really do think only about yourself." Simon jabbed a finger furiously at Alvin, feeling sympathy for Brittany.
"Simon, what can I do to help? Do you expect me to dump Jeanette and break her heart? You're so unreasonable! When I fall for her it's my fault, but when she chooses to be with me, it's still my fault!" Alvin fought back.
"G-guys? This is really unnecessary." Theodore tried to butt in between them.
"No, I don't expect you to do that. But you don't have to brag about taking her to the dance and make Brittany sound bad! You wouldn't like it if Jeanette went with me and I rub it all in your face, would you?" Simon argued back, completely ignoring Theodore's comment.
"Okay look, I'm sorry I came off as insensitive. But seriously, it's also your fault on your part. If a girl wants someone else, get over it." Alvin glared murderously at his bespectacled brother.
"R-remember what Dave said today!" Theodore tried to grab their attention.
"She doesn't want you. She doesn't even know what she wants!" Simon corrected Alvin.
"Neither do you!" Alvin challenged.
"I know what she wants, and I know what's best for her." Simon pushed Alvin with his index finger.
"Geez, who are you, her father? That's great, I can see how you fit to be with her." Alvin faked a sarcastic laugh at the end of his sentence.
"I'm her best friend." Simon corrected him.
"Who has no chance of becoming her boyfriend, unlike me." Alvin mocked out of frustration in the midst of their fight.
His words hit Simon right in the heart, and Simon widened his eyes, taken aback.
"Stop this!" Theodore yelled, finally catching their attention.
"Look, I'm tired. Dave would probably be too at home after a day's work. Can't we all just get along?" Theodore pleaded.
"Ugh, Theo's right. A fight is the last thing Dave would want to see." Simon maturely ended the conversation, walking ahead.
Throughout the rest of the day, the two brothers never spoke to each other, even at the dinner table with Dave, who did not want to add on to their problem after hearing about Jeanette.
After dinner, Simon offered to help wash the dishes. Dave took the opportunity to confront Simon, believing he would be mature enough to hold a conversation about the topic.
"So... Simon. I take it that things are still not okay?" Dave assumed.
"No, in fact, it got worse." Simon sighed, wiping a plate clean.
"Jeanette's going with Alvin. And... I just..." He sighed once more.
"It's okay, Simon. I never went to homecoming with the girl of my dreams back then. I totally understand how this feels like. But, are you going?" Dave asked at the end.
"Brittany's kind enough to go with me. I was expecting her to go with one of the cool kids but, she likes Alvin. She wants Alvin, but, like me with Jeanette, Alvin doesn't really pay attention to her now." Simon explained.
"I-I really like Jeanette, Dave. And... After years of knowing Alvin, something just doesn't feel right about the both of them together. Jeanette is sweet, naive, and gullible. Alvin could take advantage of her anytime." Simon gulped.
"You know how he likes to control Theodore. And she would think it's okay. I can't even imagine what would happen Alvin breaks her heart." Simon shared his perspective.
Dave took notice of Simon using the phrase when instead of if, knowing that Simon thought it was definite of Alvin breaking Jeanette's heart.
"I know it's hard to accept when your best friend chooses a boy you feel isn't right for her. It's the same for me when my sons do something I feel isn't right for them." Dave sympathised with him.
"But there's nothing you can do except tell her about your feelings. Does she know?" Dave asked.
Simon shook his head, resting his hands on the counter after washing everything.
"I'm afraid she won't like me." Simon explained.
"Why wouldn't she like you, Simon? You're such a good boy." Dave tried to cheer him up.
"But... Alvin's so much cooler than me. He's the popular kid. The sweet talker. The charmer." Simon shook his head.
"Why did I think I have a chance against him?" He sighed, hopping off the stool.
"Oh, Simon, don't be too affected. It's just a crush. It will go away." Dave assured him.
"I kept telling myself that for two years, I know this isn't just a normal crush." Simon shook his head, leaving.
"Simon." Dave called with a tone of command, causing Simon to turn back to him.
"Then tell her." Dave stated.
Simon said nothing, but continued walking up to his room and leaving Dave in the kitchen. Dave sighed, shaking his head.
"Young love." He remarked to himself.
A/N: Indeed, Dave, I agree. Poor Simon :< I wanna thank you readers who continue to support my story regardless of who wins in the end! I promise that either way, the ending will be superb(at least, I hope for it to be)! And if it's still not satisfying, I'm preparing some extra stuff to stay tuned to ;)
