"Oh, yeah, that's right!" Jeanette exclaimed, fishing into her bag for it.
They spent the next whole hour reading and talking about the book, which reminded Simon of something.
"I didn't write my name because you had arrived at the library and was calling me. I didn't want to let you know at that exact moment because, I wasn't really prepared." Simon explained.
"Aw Simon..." Jeanette sighed, turning to look at the night sky, "I think it's absolutely perfect to tell me tonight."
They gazed at the huge luminous moon and admiring the twinkling fireballs up in the sky. Simon looked at Jeanette hesitantly, catching her attention.
"Yes?" She giggled softly.
"Um.. I was always afraid, but, thanks to you, I want to get over my shyness around you by saying out my feelings." Simon unfolded a piece of paper from his tuxedo pocket.
Jeanette placed her hand over her heart, touched by the amount of surprises he was giving her on such a memorable night.
"H-hey Jeanette..." Simon stammered, his eyes darting from the paper to her repeatedly.
"I don't know if you know this, but, you've always been the prettiest girl to me. I-I don't mean that everyone else is ugly, it's just that, there are many things about you that, well, make you stand out. Your sweet nature, for example. It, intrigues me, when you're the one who always calms me down when I feel stressed out. Another thing I like about you, is your kindness and compassion towards others, regardless of the way they treat you." Simon slowly gained confidence in what he was saying and looked directly at Jeanette in the eyes.
"Sure, you have your flaws like your clumsiness, but when you fall, I'm honoured to be the one who always catches you." He winked, causing Jeanette's cheeks to redden and she looked down with a shy smile.
"And your shyness. I wouldn't change a thing about you. Your shyness makes you so humble and modest, and I really admire that in a girl. If anyone ever tells you different and brings you down, remember that they don't see you the way I do. And usually, aren't I the one who's usually always right?" Simon joked, earning a chuckle from Jeanette.
"I hope that this doesn't put us on a weird level when I tell you that I really like you, maybe even love you, and I would never, ever, ever, in my entire life, mistreat you. I would be very grateful if you were to put your trust in me, and call me yours. So what do you say?... Can I call you mine?" Simon looked down shyly when he asked the last question.
"Your best friend regardless of your answer, Simon." He finished.
"Simon... I don't know what to say." Jeanette was truly speechless.
"I um... Ran out of paper. Too many letters." He chuckled.
"This is my summer homework, situational writing. But um, this is all I have written." He revealed to her an almost blank page, with only a greeting at the top that involved her name.
Jeanette was so struck dumb that she could not even form a sentence in her head. She just stared at Simon, letting all the information sink in slowly. Simon just read everything - not from the paper, but from the bottom of his heart. She said nothing, but leaned forward to give Simon a kiss on the cheek. Now it was Simon's turn to become speechless, as Jeanette recovered from her loss of words. She smiled at him.
