Pakkun and I were nearing what used to be the entrance of the village, before coming to a halt. The pug looks up at me and says,
"I'm sorry about Kakashi, I know how close you two were to each other."
I shake my head and look towards the forest that was surrounding the crater that used to be the village, I reply,
"A Shinobi's life is short Pakkun, you know that. As much as it hurts, we both knew it was bound to happen eventually."
The words that passed my lips came out more emotionless and harsh than I meant them to, it was making it seem like I didn't care at all that the man I loved was dead. It was quite the opposite, this was affecting me more than anything else. The pug and I remained where we were for what seemed like an eternity, before we could hear someone approaching. I turned my attention away from the swaying leaves on the trees back to the destoyed village, just as a familiar face approaches us. It was Iruka, and it seemed as if he was glad to see us.
He stands close to me and asks,
"How long have you been here?"
"We just got back," I reply simply,
"But long enough to see what happened here, and to see what happened to Kakashi."
The brunette then wraps his arms around me in a gentle hug, it was really comforting right now. Iruka had always been a very close friend of mine, and when I was first getting to know him; I could swear he had a crush or something on me. I brought my arms up and wrapped them around him, returning the embrace.
"I'm sorry, Keira," he says quietly after a moment,
"I didn't think you knew yet, I was actually hoping you didn't so you wouldn't have to deal with even more pain right now."
I didn't say anything, mostly because I didn't know what to say. We pulled apart after a few more moments, and Pakkun asks,
"Do you know what happened to the village, Iruka?"
He nods, and replies,
"The Akatsuki member, Pein, is attacking the village. I'm not sure on how, but he knows a jutsu that flattened the entire village, as you can see; Lady Tsunade protected everyone with Lady Katsuyu. There was multiple ninja who tried to stop him, but failed."
Iruka pauses for a moment, an apologetic look crosses his face, but he continues,
"Naruto came back not that long ago, he led Pein away from the village; he hasn't been back around this way for some time."
I heaved a sigh, causing the pug and brunette alike to give me an odd look. Iruka then asks after a moment,
"How are you taking everything? I mean, you have just taken in a lot, and I'm worried as to how you're doing."
I felt kind of flattered that he was this concerned, but I wasn't very surprised much. I offer a slight shrug along with,
"It's kind of hard to believe, actually. It almost doesn't seem real, any of it. I kind of wish that I could have been here before any of this happened, but I know if I had been here, I probably wouldn't even be talking to you right now."
"You know that even if you had been here, Kakashi wouldn't have done anything differently," Iruka replies as he places his hand on my shoulder,
"He would have done the same thing, just to protect you two."
I nod and say,
"I realize that, but it doesn't change the fact that he's gone."
There I go again, making my words seem more harsh than I mean them to be. It looked like Iruka knew that I didn't mean it that way though, and I was thankful he did. He then says,
