Working on defense

You made it back to your room and took a long hot shower trying to get the memories out of your mind. Cloud slept out on his bed waiting patiently for you. When you came out you put on a pair of black jeans and a white long sleeved shirt with your black sneakers again.
"Come on" you called to Cloud and he got up quickly following you. You left your hair down your back, letting it air dry. When you got to the dining room you saw Clint switched spots with Scott and patted the seat next to him while Cloud went to go eat.
When you finished sitting down Clint looked at you curiously and gave a small smile.
"I'm headed to go see Laura and the kids in a few days. Any chance you will be doing some baking before I go?" he raised an eyebrow and you gave a smile.
"Of course, I can do that" you nodded. "I have to make a pie for my friend Detective Morgan and his wife too" you admitted and saw that Bucky looked over at you quickly.
"Is that the guy that comes around sometimes?" Clint asked passing you some food.
"Yeah, he's a good man" you nodded. "He's been a good friend for the last year" you admitted, opening up slightly.
"I thought that was your boyfriend" Sam quipped.
"That's what he tells them to get in the gate" you shrugged. "Its easier than explaining that he's helping me with something" you admitted softly.
"What's he helping you with?" Sam asked quickly and you looked down at your food and started eating pretending not to hear the question. He nodded to himself and went to eat his own food.
"You'll have to keep working on your defense while I'm out seeing my family. I want you to work with Natasha, she's good at that" Clint offered. You nodded as you continued to eat. "You going to see the boys tonight?"
"Yeah, I like seeing them when I'm not on missions" you nodded. "I'm sure they passed their tests so I'll just pick them up some ice cream on my way"
"Can I come again? I feel like getting out" Steve chirped up automatically.
"We can go for a drive if you want to get out" Sam offered looking to Bucky who just nodded.
"No, its fun going to see the boys, I won't be long" he shook his head.
"Sure, I'd love the company" you hesitantly nodded, wondering how the hell he was going to explain this one to his two best friends.
"I had the cook prepare their meals again" Tony warned you.
"I still owe them ice cream" you gave a small smile. "I know they passed their tests" you continued and felt your phone go off. You immediately paled, but ignored it. "Tony, since I'm on the family plan, do you mind having my number changed for me?" you asked gently.
"Sure, I'll take care of that tomorrow while you're on your mission" he nodded. "Well, I'll wait until you get back from your mission so you don't lose phone service" he corrected himself.
"Thanks" you smiled.
"Didn't you just change it last month? It was updated in our contacts" Bucky asked curiously.
"I keep getting wrong number calls" you quickly lied. "It would be better to start fresh" you felt your phone still going off. You were afraid to check it. You quickly finished your meal and stood up taking your plate to the kitchen. "May I be excused?" you asked gently. "I need to wash Cloud's face before I go"
"Go for it" Tony nodded, and Pepper looked to him worriedly. You started to rush away, and finally pulled out your phone and looked at it. The text message that kept repeating itself was "I'm coming to get you" and "Don't bother trying to hide anymore". You walked into your room with Cloud on your heels and sat on the side of the bed, quickly calling Morgan to give him the new phone number and what the messages said. He promised to look into it when he got back to work in the morning before hanging up. You looked down at your shaking hands and Cloud whimpered.
"I'm okay" you gave a soft smile. "He won't find me here" you hoped.
"He's getting worse" Cloud warned you. "He might find us here"
"It's a safe place, no one wants to take on the Avengers compound" you shook your head. "He's not that stupid"
Steve took that moment to come in your room and strode up to you, taking in your pale faced expression and your shaking hands. He grabbed your phone from your hand and started going through it.
"We shouldn't go out tonight" he spoke softly.
"I promised the boys, I never break my promises" you shook your head. "He's just trying to rattle me. Its fine. The boys never stay in the same place twice" you added.
"This isn't something you should be ignoring" Steve raised his voice slightly.
"Until the other day, you had no idea I was going through this" you started to argue.
"You're not being safe" he shook his head, and crossed his arms. "You should let us tell the team"
"No, its my personal Hell, and no one else's business. If he crosses that line, yes, we will tell them. Let me have what normalcy I can have with this" you felt your eyes starting to brim with tears. "I didn't do anything wrong" you started crying. "I shouldn't be the one in a cage"
"No, you didn't do anything wrong. I'm sorry I raised my voice" Steve looked apologetic. "I'm just worried, until he's back in jail..." he drifted off and you tried to wipe your tears.
"The longest he's been in jail has been three weeks" you looked at him. "For attempted murder, and they had to let him go because they said it was faulty evidence. I found out later the judge was likely paid off"
"You're giving up?" Steve asked gently.
"If I quit, the team doesn't get brought in on this. I have enough money to run away" you started down that thought train. "I can go somewhere he wont find me"
"We are not accepting your resignation, for the last time" his voice was firm and you looked up to see the door was open.
"Lets just go see the boys, okay?" you went into the bathroom and washed off your makeup and came back out. Steve was still standing there looking through your phone. "Let it go Steve, Morgan already knows. There's nothing more we can do for now" you took your phone and put it in your pocket.

After you got the boys their meals you met Steve and Cloud at the truck and drove at a leisurely pace to the ice cream shop you knew they preferred and got five ice creams, since Cloud did like vanilla. You started driving through downtown, watching for any cars that might be following but didn't see any. You found a better lit parking lot and the evidence of webbing and parked the truck, while getting out and giving a whistle. Cloud jumped into the back before you got the tailgate down, eagerly waiting his ice cream. Steve got in and took the same seat as the day before. Peter and Pietro soon joined you and had huge grins on their faces.
"Show me" you held out your hand, and they both showed you the tests that they aced with 100%. "I knew it" you grinned. "How is patrol going?"
"Its quiet tonight" Peter sighed. "We might come home a bit earlier"
"Yeah, its been pretty boring" Pietro nodded as they both dug into their supper. "Why are you here again Captain?" he asked pointedly.
"I had fun last night, thought I would try it again" he smiled as he licked at his ice cream. "I don't leave the compound enough"
"You should try patrolling with us, its fun to help just normal people" Peter shrugged.
"Its good for them to see us more than just on the tv" Pietro added.
"I get tired of the paparazzi" Steve admitted. "Once you're introduced as a full avenger, you'll have that to look forward to Y/N"
"I don't know I'll make it that far" you shrugged.
"Why wouldn't you? You are a strong force to be reckoned with on missions" Pietro pointed out.
"Yeah, last time you took down the inside of the base on your own before we even knew there was trouble" Peter nodded.
"I don't know" you shook your head. "Not sure I'm ready for that" you lied.
"You'll see, its not so bad once your name is out there" Pietro offered. "We could call you fire girl" he joked.
"I'd rather go with Wolf girl" you giggled and Cloud let out a long groan.
"I'd rather you didn't" Cloud looked at you with ice cream on his face.
"Its better than fire girl" you smiled at him, and wiped his muzzle from the ice cream.
"We will find a name for you" Steve smiled. "A good one"
"I like my name, its just Y/N" you shrugged.
"We better get back and see if there's anything going on before we head home" Peter stood up after finishing his ice cream. "Thanks Y/N, we always love having you visit"
"I'm on mission tomorrow, so no visits tomorrow" you reminded them and they nodded.
"We will see you at breakfast" Pietro jumped out of the back and you gave a smile and a wave as they headed back down an alley.
