Despite Bucky's promise to see you during the night, the only time you woke up was when Steve came in to grab Pup, which you had no idea how he had gotten there. You had been in a dead sleep, only dreaming of the day that you met your Cloud and your walk through the woods with him, talking about everything that came with being a companion, and what he would now experience. You remembered he seemed a bit put off on the life cycle being matched with yours at first, but you explained that's how the bond worked. You knew he had also shared this knowledge with Melody already, and could feel she was at peace with it. You were glad that Bucky was resting if Steve was in your room. He looked tired, but knew he was going to be stubborn about keeping watch. Just like Bucky is.
When you woke up for the second time, it was morning and the sun was shining in. You checked your phone and saw it was Thursday morning, and knew you had to work on your abilities this morning before heading to the gym for the afternoon. You stretched getting out of bed and went to use the bathroom, not bothering to check to see who was keeping watch. You washed up and put on your makeup before going into the closet and pulling out a pair of dark blue leggings, and a form fitting white t-shirt. You decided to go with white undergarments for now, and hoped you wouldn't regret your decision against a training bra for today. You tied up your sneakers and came out to see Cloud and Melody passed out still on the bed, cuddled together. Your gaze went to the balcony and you saw Sam sitting with Pup and was feeding him. You were a little baffled, since you hadn't seen him hold Pup before, but he was doing it perfectly. You walked outside and sat beside him, giving him a smile.
"Good morning" you looked to him, and he barely looked up.
"I can't get over how cute he is" he shook his head. "Just look at him gobbling up all that milk" he chuckled.
"Since when are you on protection detail?" you giggled.
"I volunteered. Bucky took the first few hours, Steve the next few, and then its me for the next few days" Sam smiled at you. "I gotta make sure that Pup knows I'm pack too" he gave a wink.
"You're holding him perfectly" you smiled at him. "And thank you for helping them. I'd really rather no one was watching my room at night. I'm safe here" you sighed.
"That bullet you took doesn't make it feel so safe for us. We are family here, and we protect family. I just don't understand why you never fought back, or told anyone" he shook his head.
"I didn't want to kill him, and I thought if I did, I would. I never told anyone because by the time he was done with me, I didn't have any friends left except Cloud" you whispered.
"I thought we were friends" he looked at you seriously.
"I didn't want my personal life at work, it took me moving here to realize that I had more friends than I thought" you admitted softly. "I just thought everyone saw me as a team mate, or a protégé. I didn't think what I went through at home mattered as long as the job was done"
"Just like mission seven" he looked at you with a raised eyebrow.
"I guess. I internalize a lot" you admitted sheepishly.
"Its too bad the comms didn't work on that mission. I would have tried to help you. It was hard to find out on a report what you went through, and you never said a word" he shook his head. "Should have known then you were used to some kind of pain. No one gets out of a battle like that unscathed"
"I still have nightmares about it" you admitted softly. "It was my first mission I had to let Cloud..." you trailed off. "And to use my powers... I can still hear their flesh burning and their screams" you shuddered.
"I can only imagine. I wish you would have told me instead" he shook his head and put down the bottle, ruffling your hair. "So where do you think you are headed?" he demanded after a moment.
"For a walk in the woods" you gave a smile. "I have to wake up Cloud and Melody to go"
"Mind if I come with you?" he asked quickly.
"Are you taking this as protection detail or as a friend?" you quirked an eyebrow.
"A little bit of both" he admitted.
"I'd prefer if it was just as a friend" you sighed. "I'm not a damsel in distress"
"Come on, get the wolves. We can take the back balcony down to avoid all those police cars" he smirked at you and you nodded and opened the door back up to call Cloud and Melody to get up.
