Secrets revealed- The truth behind KS's resignation

Flashback

KS slowly opened the door exhaustion overwhelming her. She silently tiptoed to her room, creeping in the darkness, her heart buried with guilt. She closed the door behind her when someone grabbed her from behind. She flicked the light switch and saw Veyom, his expressions neutral as he sat on the bed.

"Vi...." she started as she made her way towards him.

Veyom exhaled, his expressions softening. He was never one to be angry with his wife, but lately his temper had gotten the best of him.

"Karu, you promised that we'd have dinner together" he said.

"I'm really sorry Vi but there was a case...."

He stood up abruptly interrupting KS. He turned around, placing his hands on his chest.

"Karu, I know your duty is important to you and I really respect that but there has to be some time for us too..."

KS nodded, the guilt swallowing her words. She fumbled playing with her knuckles. Veyom turned around and knelt near her, taking both her hands and placing a deep kiss.

"Karu, I love you more than anything and it brings me pride to say that my wife is a police officer." He looked up at KS and smiled. "I'm not asking you to stop your duty. All I'm asking for is a little time-for us, is that too much?"

He pressed a kiss to her palm before silently retiring to the bed, leaving KS a mess of thoughts.

KS stood at her table at the MPT, her thoughts echoing Veyom's words. She gripped the pen in her hand, digging it tightly into her skin, reddening the soft flesh around.

She knew that Veyom was right. She had missed many intimate moments with him because of her job. KS knew that he had been patient and understanding yet Veyom was also human. He didn't ask for much, only a little time with her. KS sighed, leaning back in her chair, massaging her temples. She was caught between her two responsibilities; wife and officer. How could she be expected to stay loyal and dedicated to both her duties at the same time.

She closed her eyes leaning on her memories. Their first meeting, first date, late night outings. Each memory unscrambled in front of her evoking a fresh stream of unspoken emotions in her.

What could she do? Resignation, the word came clearly to her, the only solution that appeared in her mind. She stared blankly at the wall, her eyes devoid of emotions. Could she live without her uniform?

She returned home late at night, slowly heading towards the kitchen. She saw a plate of food on the table with a small handwritten note.

"I heated your dinner. I know you haven't eaten."

KS chuckled, tears dropping from her eyes at Veyom's care towards her. Veyom loved her more than anything and yet here she was selfishly serving justice to the entire world. What about justice to my husband, she thought with gritted teeth.

She sat down, picking at the food in her plate, her mind filled with wayward thoughts. Her mind touched on the past, the day she became a police officer. She smiled, the memories overriding herself. She was ecstatic with happiness on that day. KS had finally fulfilled her dream, her sole ambition and purpose in life. At the same time, she traveled to a distant corner and saw Veyom, her true love who stood beside her, no matter what the world said. Veyom became her world, her rock and her biggest support.

She awoke back to the present, her throat choking with tears. She washed the plate, her eyes moistened with the weight of unspoken thoughts. She chugged an entire glass of water, her eyes shining in a new resolution. She would have to resign, that was her only option, she thought, her mind determined yet caught up in a heat of confusion.

Flashback

Veyom stood near the railing overlooking the Dubai night sky. He clenched his jaw, frustration seeping out. He gripped his phone tightly in his hand as once again the automatic voice answered. He let out a shaky breath, gripping the steel railing with both hands, the coldness instantly pricking his skin.

Karu...where are you? Why aren't you answering my calls?

He clasped his hands together, praying for her safety, tears springing from his eyes. He closed his eyes, reveling in the nostalgic warmth of his wife, her love and laughter arousing a fire inside him.

He was proud of his wife, proud of who she was and what she did. Veyom respected KS's uniform and her dedication towards serving the country. He sighed, his tears colliding with the railing. But, he also wanted to feel the presence of his wife, at home. Veyom was always traveling around the world, busy with his international businesses whilst his wife was busy serving the nation. They didn't have time for each other. Veyom gripped the railing tighter, the effort whitening his knuckles. Did they fall out of love, he wondered and immediately shook his head. No, they loved each other a lot but Veyom knew that they both had busy schedules.

Compromise, isn't that what relationships were all about. He thought, opening his tear soaked eyes. He recalled the hollow ache in his heart when he walked to his room alone at night, the loneliness creeping in on him when KS skipped meeting him and the anxiety that pounded through his heart when she didn't answer his calls.

Veyom fell down to the floor, his back pressed against the glass window. Tears streaked down his cheeks, his hands clasped tightly in front of him. He was torn between two worlds. He loved his wife and he never wanted to pin her down yet he also wanted to enjoy their life, their married life together, not alone. Veyom screamed, his screams piercing the stillness of the night, releasing his pent up frustration. He switched off his phone and retired to his bed, engulfing in an uneasy slumber.

KS folded the crisp white edges neatly packing the letter into a manila envelope whilst her eyes stared at her phone. Veyom still hadn't answered her phone. Guilt ransacked her heart, pricking into places deep. She sighed, leaning back, caressing the soft envelope in her hands, her fingers trembling.

She yelled in frustration as Veyom's phone continued to be unreachable. She kept the letter aside and walked around, each step echoing of a dire pounding, mirroring her heart. She placed both her hands on her head, firmly rubbing her temples as she stormed around the room.

Was she taking the right decision? She asked, over and over again, the question piercing her heart.

She sat down on the floor, her balled fists raining down on the floor. She recalled her encounters with Veyom, their brief moments of intimacy. A shrill fire echoed through her spine as she reminisced over his touch. A memory poked its head out and she remembered how they had to break the Karvachauth fast over a video call. KS had an emergency yet she knew that Veyom was terribly excited to see his wife dressed up in a red saree. Veyom hadn't said anything as usual though KS knew he was disappointed. It wasn't the first time. KS had to cancel many of their dinner plans because of untimely schedule and Veyom had never raised a word in protest.

Her mind flew to her recent encounter with Veyom, his words churning in her mind. "All I ask for is a little time- for us." She knew that he wasn't wrong. He had every right to demand his wife's presence. KS had failed in her duty as a wife. She had failed to fulfill her promise to the sole person she loved more than anything in the world.

KS stood up, a fire flashing in her eyes as she clad her uniform. She picked the letter, her trembling hands settled. She sighed, exhaling a deep breath. She had to do this. It was her last choice.
