Love that Binds

At the Singh residence, KS stood staring deep ahead, ripping the letter in her fisted palm. Behind her, a baby cried loudly, his cries splintering a shard through her heart. KS's entire world has shattered within minutes. She stood, her anger fuming out her eyes as the tears stood frozen perching on her eyelids as if awaiting permission to drop down into the world.

Puspha Ji looked from the baby to KS, her heart hammering in her chest. Her hands felt heavy, the revelation echoing through her mind.

The baby's constant cries acted as a contrast to the silent storm raging inside the house as each member tried to grapple with the weight of the truth.

KS looked back for a fleeting moment, her eyes flickering to the baby and Puspha Ji. Her eyes were swollen and puffed, the anger shining through. She left without a moment's notice, bolting out the door before anyone could stop. As she left, the letter fell to the floor, bouncing a few steps in its crumbling heap.

Puspha Ji held back her tears trying to console the baby in her hands as she fought a debilitating war. She stared at the retreating figure of KS, love and concern creasing her forehead.

KS sped through the streets of Lucknow, her palms gripping the throttle. The road blurred in front of her, her vision swimming in a pool of whiteness. She gripped the handle tighter as the memories rose, the contents of the letter surfacing in her mind.

KS had just discovered that Veyom had an illicit affair. The confession from the woman stated that the baby whom she had left at KS's doorstep was now KS's responsibility. The bike bumped over a speed breaker, lurching KS forward. How could she believe her? KS wondered. The woman might be lying. How could she doubt her own husband, the only person who'd loved her unconditionally.

A shadow of a doubt stemmed through her heart, the echoes of the baby's cries ringing in her mind. Could it really be so? KS punched the petrol tank steering her thoughts away. She stopped the bike, the sudden moment violently thrusting her forwards. She fished out her phone and called Veyom, gripping the mobile tightly in her hands. Unreachable, the automated voice said. She sighed, pocketing her phone as she sped through the streets, her mind fighting a losing battle.

She stopped near a chai stall, parking her bike on a side. Absentmindedly, she ordered a chai and leaned on her bike, the rings curling towards the sky. She sipped, her tongue ignoring the biting heat as she stared, her eyes devoid of emotion. The steam of the chai warmed her fingers, the scent of cardamom and ginger hitting through as a memory danced to the surface.

It was during a late December night that KS and Veyom had spontaneously driven for a cup of chai. They had opted for a long drive, cruising under the moonlit streets. KS chuckled, the warmth of the memory hugging her from all sides. She wrapped her hands around herself, exhaling a breath of relief as if Veyom himself was present next to her. She slowly awoke to the present, the yellowing bulb of the stall growing dimmer as she gulped her chai.

She straightened, crushing the cup in her hands grounding herself to the moment. Her eyes fell on her uniform, the golden stars shining in her eyes. Her fingers subconsciously twirled around her ring, the weight of it heavy in her chest. She perched on her bike and texted Veyom, her fingers flying bullets over the phone. She ignited the bike, staring ahead with a purpose.

She was KS; a wife and an officer. She wasn't about to let a random woman accuse her husband. KS chuckled, Veyom's unquestionable warmth wrapping around her. She knew that their love was strong, that they could overcome any barrier as long as they stood together. Veyom had once told her that they were inseparable, that even if the whole world fought against them, they would still be together. That was the belief KS held in her heart, the promise to her husband and to her duty shining through the holds of deceit.
