I have a brother named Guanchao. He's one year older than me. Even though we share the same parents, we couldn't be more different. He's always been smarter than me. When we were little, I played with building blocks, while his toys were variable resistors and ammeters. I was still learning my multiplication tables when he had already memorized the periodic table. He'd discuss whether a moving charge generating a magnetic field violated the law of conservation of energy with the teacher, and I couldn't even understand the punctuation.

I've often suspected that he has two brains—and he stole mine.

When I was little, I used to envy only children the most. Guanchao and I fought constantly growing up, and he never let me win. Last year, my older cousin had a second child. Her eldest looked really down during the full month celebration, and Guanchao beamed as he told him, "Congrats—now you have someone to take the blame when you mess up." That's how tragic my childhood was.
