Shade#56 (S3): Follow-up

Start from the beginning

I'll shoot you a text next time. Is the Chief in?

[Toria]

Yeah, he's here. He could be busy. There are a lot of people crammed in the lobby worried about their folks.

[Shade]

Alright. Hey, could you do me a solid and give this to CSI? Ask them if they can see what kind of drugs can be made with these other drugs.

SHADE HANDS TORIA THE LIST, SHE LOOKS IT OVER AND SITS IT DOWN ON HER DESK.

[Toria]

Right. I'll get it to them.

[Shade]

Thanks.

SHADE GOES TO CHEIF RITTER'S OFFICE AND KNOCKS ON THE FRAME OF HIS DOORWAY. CHIEF RITTER SIGNALS FOR SHADE TO COME IN AFTER HE HANGS UP THE PHONE.

[Chief Ritter]

Hey, kid, I appreciate the help with tracking down some of Rambler's victims. They're having to move one of them to an even more secure cell. Jesus, I don't know how someone could ever do that to people.

[Shade]

Don't mention it. Have there been any more transformations?

[Chief Ritter]

No, surprisingly. From the looks of it either it's doing nothing or it's transforming them completely. I really hope the doctors from Castle Falls will be able to tell us something.

[Shade]

Is there any way that I can talk to Rambler?

[Chief Ritter]

Why would you want to do something like that?

[Shade]

Who knows? He might slip up and say something that could be useful.

CHIEF RITTER SCRATCHES HIS HEAD.

[Chief Ritter]

Sure, I don't see the harm it could do. However, for the sake of precaution, I'll be tagging along.

[Shade]

That doesn't sound like a bad idea. Does your phone have a recorder?

[Chief Ritter]

Yeah. I like the way you think.

SHADE LEAVES WITH CHIEF RITTER AND THEY START GOING TOWARD RAMBLER'S HOLDING CELL.

[Chief Ritter]

Hey, I've got a question for you Shade.

[Shade]

What's that?

[Chief Ritter]

You know that I defended you in the light of Maxwell's article right?

[Shade]

Yeah, and I appreciate it.

[Chief Ritter]

"If you stand for something people will hit you in the legs to see how long it is before your knees hit the pavement." That's something my father learned from his dad. They were both cops.

[Shade]

Are they—?

[Chief Ritter]

Yeah, they're both gone. Both died in the profession. I'd say there's no greater way to go out but I hope I get to live to retirement. I quoted my grandfather because I feel like you really do stand for something. It might not be the most defined but a stand is a stand. Most people would argue that these other metahumans would rise to the call that you've indirectly issued. How do you feel about something like that?
