Chapter 24 - Finally, Some Answers

"But why didn't either of you say anything so I wouldn't have had to deal with this by myself?"

Now, the men were looking remorseful. Adan picked up the conversation from there. "We didn't tell you because we weren't allowed to. Our Alphas were worried that you'd already joined the rogues."

Ryder hated how much he understood that answer. So far, the rogues had been awful. They'd cost him a ton in car repair and made him lose sleep. Not to mention they had initially planned on killing him. No wonder people hated rogues.

"Well, I didn't join them, and never plan to. They killed that hiker from before, all because he looked slightly like me."

Kendric took out his phone and started texting.

Adan just sighed. "So you knew about that too."

"Yeah. The murderer is staying at the complex I live in. His name is Henry, but what was I going to tell the police? That some werewolves were trying to kill me because they accidentally turned me into one of them?"

"You know a lot more than I was expecting, for someone who didn't join the rogues."

"Of course, I know. I kept trying to skip town to avoid joining them, but they trashed my truck and I was worried they'd track me back to my family and threaten them. So I've been stuck here ever since."

Adan looked like he regretted his accusation instantly, and put a hand on Ryder's back. "I'm sorry. I had no idea it was that serious."

Ryder just leaned forward and put his forehead on the cool table surface. It helped comfort him, if only slightly.

Kendric noticed Adan's hand and frowned. "Ryder, you said this Henry guy is your neighbor, but what about the others? How many there are?"

"I don't know exactly how many there are. I think there's almost a dozen." He decided to keep Axel's existence to himself for now. If the rogues were captured, then he knew the blond would be upset with him for it. But at the same time, the man would finally be free from that horrible group.

"Okay. That's good. We can work with that." Kendric looked toward Adan. "I'll have my Betas scout the area, but I don't think we'd have access to the resident's information. Do you think-?"

"Yeah, don't worry. My uncle should be able to pull some strings."

Ryder rolled his head to the side and eyed Kendric. "You kept asking me to tell you my address. Do you need it for the apartments? I had some trouble finding them even with the maps app."

"Actually...I already know where you lived."

Ryder raised his head, and Adan removed his hand from his back. "What? how?"

"The Uber drivers. A few of them were from Blue Field and they told me where you were going."

"So you were spying on me too? It wasn't enough that I had rogues tracking me, but you were too?" He turned on Adan. "And you?"

"I...Yes. I knew too."

"Ugh!" Ryder put his head back down on the table and covered himself with his arms. He had already suspected the Uber drives of blabbing, but now that it was confirmed, he was extra upset. "Why would you guys even keep asking for my address if you already knew?"

"I didn't want you to feel uncomfortable," Kendric explained. This time, he gently touched Ryder's arm. "I saw that you didn't want us to know. But we had to keep tabs on you. In the beginning, we were worried you might have had something to do with the attack on the hiker. We didn't have much choice."

"I would have preferred it if you had been straightforward with me like you usually were," Ryder complained. Then sat back up. "Why couldn't you have been honest and asked me directly?"
