His parents stepped into the clearing, guns blazing, and he ran to them, getting out of the way of any wayward bullets. Axel and Mabel disappeared somewhere within the trees, and soon the wolves were gone.
The shooting died down, but his parents still kept their guns up, scanning the darkness, and then shooting at whatever noise they heard.
"Alright, I think they've run." His father said.
"Let's get back to the road. Hurry." Ryder's mother turned and urged them both to move.
Clueless as to what was going on, Ryder ran alongside them with a million questions. "What are you doing here?"
"Now's not the time. Just get to the road, get in the car, and we'll get out of here." His father snapped back, eyes still seeking any potential attackers.
"Mom! Say something!" He turned to her instead, already accustomed to his father's terrible explanations.
She shook her head, releasing a hand from the trigger and swinging the rifle with one arm. "I'm sorry. We were worried so we came to see you. We tried to tell you but you stopped answering our calls."
"I had other things going on."
"I can see that." His dad replied gruffly. "After all those animal attacks, what the hell were you doing in the woods in the first place? We raised you better than this!"
"What are you two doing in the woods?" He started getting frustrated. "This is nowhere near the road. You couldn't have possibly found me by coincidence. So how did you even know where to find me?
"Honey, please don't be angry. But we had a tracker installed on your phone when we gave it to you." His mother, Sharlene, finally explained. "We were worried something might happen."
"You were tracking my phone?"
"Parents do it all the time."
"That's an invasion of privacy!"
"It saved your ass, didn't it?" His father, Paul, interrupted, then shot into the darkness at another noise he couldn't identify.
They all paused to make sure it wasn't another attack, then continued.
"That still doesn't explain what you're doing out here at..." He checked the time. "Three in the morning!"
"We were just worried."
"At 3 A.M.? Seriously? You couldn't wait until morning? How did you know that now, of all times, I needed help?"
"Mother's intuition."
*buzz*
Ryder rolled his eyes and fought the urge to dig his heels into the ground. He knew if he stopped now, he'd be in danger all over again. "I need a better explanation than that."
"No, you don't. Right now, we're all in danger, and until we're safe we're going to be quiet."
"Then can I at least get a gun?" He asked, noticing that this dad had a spare across his back. "Let me defend myself!"
"You're not ready for this."
"I'm the one they're after!"
"Why?" Sharlene asked worriedly. "Did you get bitten? Show me!"
"What?"
"Answer your mother, son. Now!"
"I...I'm not bit."
"Are you sure? Not even a small bite? Any break in your skin is dangerous!"
At that, Ryder stopped in his tracks and stared at the both of them. "Are you two...?"
