He'd arrived early for his next class and was surprised when the teacher, Mrs. Ellis, asked to speak with him in private. No one else was in the room, so she closed the door behind them and sat at her desk.
"Don't be nervous. You're not in trouble." She started, which only made Ryder more nervous.
"Okay?"
"It's about your bite. I noticed that it had healed unnaturally fast. And I wanted to ask if you've had any other injuries do the same?"
"What do you mean? I thought it healed fast because it was a werewolf bite?"
"That's not how it works. It should have healed much slower. Werewolf saliva doesn't have any supernatural capabilities aside from changing those who have been bitten during a full moon."
So the full moon was the only time a bite would change someone. Now it made more sense why it'd been so long since the last person had been changed.
"What are you suggesting?"
She glanced toward the door before sitting up straight. "Has anyone told you about supernatural abilities yet?"
"Adan has. And so did the rogues when they first tried to get me to join them. They said it was rare and made someone more valuable. But I don't have any powers as far as I'm aware. Why?"
Her eyes narrowed at him. "Are you sure?"
Now he did feel like he was in trouble. That look on her face said she knew something. "Um...Why?"
"I think you have healing powers. Maybe you haven't noticed it yourself yet?"
"Healing powers?" He hadn't even considered that possibility, let alone confirmed it. "No. I don't think so. The bite healed pretty fast, but that was because it was small."
"Good. If you do get a power, I advise keeping it to yourself."
"Wait, why? I thought packs wanted people with powers?"
"You've seen me a time or two outside of school. You see the other work I do. That's because I'm a Beta. Anyone with powers becomes a Beta and gets thrown into the thick of trouble. But you are my student, and I don't want you to get put in danger over something you didn't intend to have happen to you. Both the Sutton and Blue Field packs want to have you join them. But if it turns out you have a power, there's no telling how far the rogues will go to take you themselves. It's been said that they are more than willing to force someone into their ranks if necessary."
"Adan and Kendric-"
"Can only protect you so much." She interrupted. "You can tell them if you do develop an ability, but keep it a secret from everyone else until you decide on a safe place to stay. Without a pack, your protection will be limited."
"Right...I'll keep that in mind. Thank you."
She smiled reassuringly, then got up to open the door. Ryder took his usual seat by the window, where Adan joined him and asked why he looked upset.
Ryder hadn't realized he'd been making a face and forced himself to cut it out.
A few students glanced at Ryder, but then saw Adan sitting next to him and kept to themselves. The same thing happened in BCIS while he was sitting next to Kendric.
"Let me know if he starts acting like an ass," Adan said once their lesson was wrapping up.
"Didn't you like the lunch he made you?" Ryder deflected. "Where's the lunchbox?"
"It's in my backpack."
"What if it spills?"
"I already ate it."
