"It breaks tradition."

"Tradition?"

"Sutton has never welcomed outsiders before. There's the whole 'safety and security' mindset. Every mayor before Felix has been cautious about trusting strangers, so it was mind-blowing that he'd accepted Robert's offer."

"Which was...?"

"He's accepting Blue Field's help in getting some contractors to fill in the part of the mines that have collapsed. It's a delicate process since there are buildings right above it, but they'll try to preserve as much as possible." Adan sighed. "I just know if anything goes wrong, Felix is going to fly off the handles about it."

Ryder half wanted to point out how much more irrational Felix seemed than Robert. As an Alpha, the man didn't trust anyone and liked to point fingers. But if he had also allowed a human to date one of their pack members in the past, then clearly he was open to change. He just needed more of a push than others.

Looking up at Adan, Ryder couldn't help but feel like the man would make a better Alpha in the future.

The arm around his waist tightened, and he was knocked out of his thoughts and back to reality.

Today was Monday, and they were sitting along the wall behind the tables of baked goods that they were selling for their club fundraiser. Kendric had spent the evening before baking coconut macaroons and they had helped individually wrapped them. Now he was selling to students while Adan and Ryder sat back, less enthusiastic about playing salesman.

Adan held him close. Any passerby would suspect that they were a couple just with one glance, but Adan didn't seem to mind and Ryder wasn't sure if he cared either.

Mr. Fadecut, or Tyler, became one of their first visitors. He looked like he was just going to pass them by right up until he noticed Ryder's compromising position. He also noticed Kendric watching him, but unlike the other students, he didn't shy away.

Tyler walked right up to the table, shot one more look at Ryder, then examined the goods. "Nice buns."

Ryder snorted.

"Would you like to buy something?" Kendric gestured toward the assortment.

"Nope." He smirked back at Ryder, and walked off. Adan stared after the guy, confused by the short interaction.

The next person he recognized was none other than Mabel, who did a literal double take at Ryder and Adan. She stared, flabbergasted, but kept walking.

Another group of students started whispering to one another as they passed, throwing glances at the two. Kendric noticed and stepped in front of the three holding one of the wrapped macaroons.

"I see you've taken an interest in our stand. Would you like to buy a macaroon?" His face did not match his voice as he fought not to glare at the rude students.

"No thanks. Sorry!" The lead girl replied, and they all scurried away.

"Careful! You're ruining the merchandise!" The other volunteer, a guy named Tony, pointed out as Kendric crushed the pastry in his hand.

The tattooed man just tossed the crumbled item away and patted his palms on his jeans.

"You don't think he's upset that I'm sitting back here and not standing with him, do you?" Ryder worried.

"He's not the cuddly type. Trust me. I've tried cuddling with him before and he always squirms away. He's just angry that people are bold enough to act like dating is a crime."
