"Honey, don't stop walking!" Sharlene went to grab him by the elbow but he shrugged away.
"Are you werewolf hunters?"
His dad sighed. "Son, this is why we didn't want you to come out here."
Now he was livid, so he started walking in the direction they were headed just to keep himself from lashing out in anger. "So you knew werewolves were real, and you didn't think to tell me that when the first attack happened around here?"
"Honey, how do you know about...them?"
He turned, wanting to explain himself but fearing the consequences. "Because they've been after me! The rogues kept trying to take me away. I told them 'no' and they kidnapped Delilah to convince me to go anyway."
"They're trying to turn you." His father put it bluntly, his eyes darkening. "Did one already bite you? Before this, I mean."
"..."
"Answer me, son!"
Ryder eyed the man's gun, wondering how he'd react. Would his father choose to kill him?
"Dad...How long have you known werewolves were real? Be honest with me. I'll know if you lie."
"It's not important."
"Mom. Answer for him."
Sharlene glanced at the man. "Oh, you stubborn oaf. He's our son. We should explain ourselves."
"We wouldn't have to if he'd have stayed home!"
"But he didn't, and now we're out in the dark surrounded by bloodthirsty monsters."
Finally, his father scratched his head, acknowledging that the woman was right. "Fine. Alright. Look kid, we used to hunt as a hobby. Those things that go bump in the night were real. A lot of them are. And we would get rid of them when they became dangerous. But then it got too dangerous for us, so we moved out in the middle of nowhere to get away from it all. We didn't want you to get mixed up in this shit either. That's why we wanted you to stay home."
"So you quit being werewolf hunters to become chicken farmers?"
"Of course not!" The man scoffed. "I don't know the first thing about chickens. They were your mother's new hobby."
"I couldn't stand having nothing to do." She admitted. "But your father was worried we were getting in over our heads, so I went along with him."
"Why didn't you ever tell me all of this?"
"Would you have believed us?"
"No! But I could have used a heads-up! You know, before getting stuck in the middle of what's happening around here!"
"Alright, I'll admit that's true. But we're fixing it now. Knowing those monsters, Delilah's already dead. And with how many of them we saw back there, this town is too dangerous to stay in. You're dropping out and coming home, and that's final."
Ryder stopped yet again and glanced back into the dark. "Why are you giving up so easily? If you're hunters, aren't you supposed to want to save people?"
"We're here to save you!"
"But what about Delilah?"
"She's been missing for days." Paul rebuffed. "They more than likely killed her in the first twenty-four hours. Werewolves don't like it when their secret gets out."
"That's right." Axel agreed, stepping out from behind Ryder with a gun to his head.
Both his parents raised their rifles but were unable to get a clean shot without hitting Ryder. Axel smiled triumphantly.
