Days had passed since the embarrassing growling stomach incident with Konoha, and Y/N couldn't shake the feeling that she owed him one. It wasn't every day that someone handed you an energy bar in the middle of a hallway after your stomach practically declared war on you. But despite her best efforts to find him and properly thank him, fate (or her own cowardice) seemed to get in the way.
Every time she spotted him, either from a distance or passing by, something stopped her-whether it was her nerves or just plain awkwardness. She wasn't exactly the type to walk up to people she barely knew and strike up a conversation. I'll just... thank him later, she thought every time, only to chicken out moments after.
Then came that day.
It was lunchtime again, and this time Y/N was prepared. As soon as the bell rang, she bolted out of her seat and made a beeline for the cafeteria. There was no way she was letting herself get caught in the swarm of students again. Not today, Satan, she thought as she sped through the halls like she was in a race for Olympic gold. She arrived at the cafeteria, slightly out of breath but victorious, and quickly grabbed herself a tray of food before everything was sold out.
As she settled at a table in the far corner, she sighed with relief. Finally, peace. Her mother had suggested (okay, more like insisted) on packing her a cute bento, but between her mother's busy schedule and Y/N's laziness, that never seemed to happen. The cafeteria food wasn't exactly gourmet, but hey, it was edible. This is fine. Totally fine. Plus, I'm eating in peace, no growling stomach, no embarrassing situations. Just me and my... cafeteria food.
That peace didn't last long.
"Hey! You're the girl with the growling stomach!"
Y/N froze, her chopsticks hovering in mid-air as the food she was about to eat slipped off back onto her tray. She recognized that voice. Slowly, she turned to see none other than Konoha Akinori standing just a few feet away, grinning like he'd just found his favorite joke of the year. Behind him stood a group of guys she vaguely recognized from the Fukurodani volleyball team.
Her mind short-circuited. He remembers? Why does he remember? Oh god, why does he have to remember THAT?
In her panic, she choked on her words, coughing slightly as she tried to greet him. "I-I-hey! Uh, yeah, hi!" Great start, Y/N. Truly eloquent.
Konoha laughed, clearly enjoying himself. "Mind if I join you? You look a little lonely over here." Before Y/N could even respond, Konoha was already pulling out a chair.
And just like that, her once quiet corner table was suddenly flooded with a group of volleyball players.
She blinked. What... just happened?
Konoha plopped down across from her with a playful grin. "So, I'm Konoha Akinori a third year and also a volleyball player,"he said, leaning forward slightly, "I see you've finally managed to get yourself a proper lunch this time." He pointed at her tray.
Y/N blushed, nearly dropping her chopsticks again. "I-I always get lunch! And I'm L/N F/N, third year too. Just call me Y/N."
Konoha raised an eyebrow, teasing. "Yeah? Your stomach told a different story last time, Y/N."
One of the guys behind Konoha-Bokuto, she realized-laughed loudly. "Wait, wait, what happened? Konoha, are you telling us she went hangry on you?"
Konoha smirked. "Not exactly. Let's just say I had to save her from starvation with an emergency energy bar."
Y/N wanted the ground to swallow her whole. "It wasn't that bad," she muttered, trying to sink into her chair.
Akaashi, who was sitting next to Bokuto, gave her a small smile. "At least he was nice enough to help you out."
"Yeah, yeah, Konoha's a hero!" Bokuto declared dramatically, clapping a hand on Konoha's back. "Good job, Konoha!"
Konoha, basking in the attention, gave a mock bow. "It was nothing, really."
Y/N rolled her eyes, but she couldn't help but smile a little. They were ridiculous, but at least they weren't being mean about it. Plus, Konoha's teasing wasn't as unbearable as she thought it might be.
After the teasing died down, Konoha turned to her, suddenly more serious. "So, where are your friends? I mean, you're always eating alone."
Y/N's stomach twisted, but not from hunger this time. She glanced down at her food. "I don't really... have any friends."
The table fell silent for a moment, and Y/N mentally kicked herself for dropping that little bombshell out of nowhere. Great, now they think I'm a weirdo.
But to her surprise, Konoha didn't seem fazed. "Well, that's just an excuse for us to hang out with you more," he said with a grin, nudging her tray with his elbow. "Can't let you be a lone wolf all the time, can we?"
Bokuto, clearly not one to miss out on an opportunity for a dramatic declaration, slammed his fist on the table (making everyone jump). "Yeah! We're your friends now! No more eating alone!"
Akaashi nodded in agreement. "I guess that means you're stuck with us."
Y/N blinked. What just... happened? Did I just accidentally make friends with the volleyball team? She looked around at the group and finally managed a small laugh. "Uh, sure. Thanks, I guess?"
As the bell rang, signaling the end of lunch, the group began to disperse. Y/N stood up, still feeling slightly overwhelmed by how quickly things had escalated. As she started to head back to class, she heard someone call her name.
"Hey, Y/N!"
She turned to see Konoha jogging up to her, an easy grin on his face. "Wait up."
"Yeah?"
Konoha scratched the back of his head, a little sheepishly. "So, uh... I was thinking, it wouldn't hurt to, you know, have each other's numbers. For... friend reasons. Just so you don't feel like you owe me anything."
Y/N blinked, caught off guard. Wait... is this happening? Am I about to give a guy my number?
She smiled awkwardly and handed him her phone. "Uh, yeah, sure. Friend reasons."
Konoha grinned wider as he quickly punched his number into her phone. "Exactly. Totally innocent. No ulterior motives."
As he handed the phone back, Y/N nodded, still processing everything. "Right. Thanks, I guess?"
Before she could say more, Konoha gave her a casual wave. "Catch you later, Y/N!" He turned and jogged off, leaving her standing there, frozen.
And then it hit her. Wait. I still didn't thank him for the energy bar! I still owe him one!
She groaned, slapping a hand to her forehead. "Why am I like this?!"
