Phir Se Kolkata

---

It was one of those Kolkata afternoons where the sky looked like it had a secret.

A little dusty, a little golden, a little unsure.

Much like her.

Rihi sat curled up on the living room sofa, the TV remote untouched on her lap. The news was on. Cricket headlines blared across the screen.

"Team India returns to Kolkata for the final ODI..."

Her mother entered with a plate of cut fruits. “Match toh dekhogi, na? Aaj to tumhare favorite bhi aa rahe hain.”

She looked up — her eyes were dull.

“Who?” she asked, playing dumb.

Her father, reading the newspaper, chuckled softly. “Wahi jinka Insta pe story aaya tha… kuch din pehle… cafe mein…”

Her chest tightened.

She stood abruptly, “I have cramps. Going to lie down.”

Her mother frowned. “Cramps ya heartbreak?”

She didn’t reply.

---

Meanwhile, at Eden Gardens

Abhishek flopped onto the hotel bed, pulling out his phone. One unread message from Aashna. He smiled.

> “You’ll lose if you play like last time.”

He grinned.

> “Flirting or threatening?”

> “Motivating.”

He stared at the screen a second longer before typing:

> “Tumhare liye century pakka.”

Across the room, Shubman sat on the window ledge, headphones in but music off.

Abhishek turned to him. “Tu chup kyun hai?”

Shubman didn’t respond. His phone screen was blank. No new messages. No missed calls.

Abhishek narrowed his eyes. “Tu ne usse call bhi nahi kiya?”

“Woh... kuch kehne ke liye bacha hi kya hai?”

Abhishek looked away. He knew his friend wasn’t made for chaos — but this silence? It was worse.

“Tu bata bhi nahi paaya na, ki woh sara sirf coincidence tha…”

Shubman’s jaw clenched. “I didn’t know she was gonna be there, Abhi.”

“Par uske liye sirf tasveer hi kaafi thi.”

---

At Home

That evening, as Rihi placed her hot water bottle on her belly, her phone buzzed.

A message request. From his other account — the one he never used.

@not_so_shub_man : "I'm in town. Didn’t feel like playing without seeing you."

She stared. Typed. Deleted.

Instead, she replied:

> “Good luck.”

He replied instantly.

> “Bas itna?”

She didn't answer.

---

Next Morning – Match Day

The house was buzzing.

Her parents were excited, her sister was humming old Hindi songs while straightening her hair.

"Abhishek playing today," she teased. “Wanna bet he’ll look at me from the field?”

She didn’t respond.

Her mom walked in, frowning. “Tu pehle toh itni excited hoti thi cricket ke liye. Ab kya hua? Shubman ko bhool gayi?”

She laughed bitterly. “Mujhe kab yaad tha?”

---

At the Stadium

Under floodlights, cheers erupted. Eden Gardens never slept on match days.

She sat in front of the TV with her arms crossed. She didn’t cheer, didn’t blink when he walked onto the pitch.

Just watched.

Even from behind the screen, she noticed it — the way he scanned the stands once.

Maybe hoping.

Maybe knowing she wasn’t there.

---

In the Stands

Abhishek was about to go in to bat. Before stepping out, he looked up at the VIP section. Aashna wasn’t there either.

He sighed, then checked his phone.

A text from her:

> “Play well, Sharma ji.”

His heart softened.

He replied:

> “Only if you send a post-match selfie.”

> “Maybe.”

---

Late Night

Shubman scrolled through his gallery. Pictures. Shots from practice. Fans. Everything… but her.

He typed again.

> “Can we talk?”

> “Please?”

No reply.

Just silence.
