Bucky Barnes x ReaderIn which the reader is a sassy, rebellious guardian angel and Bucky Barnes just doesn't understand.
Bright blue eyes flashed open, oxygen filling his lungs as he gasped for breath. He was breathing. Why was he breathing? He shouldn't be breathing. His hand felt at his chest, feeling the dried blood in confusion. He lifted his head, eyes scanning his body for any wounds, but there were none. He was fine. He was alive.
Why was he alive?
Bucky tried to sit up, only to groan as a piercing pain flashed through his skull. An amused chuckle sounded from the corner of the room and he gasped, searching the room for the source of the sound. "Chill out, buddy. You were lights out ten seconds ago, you're going to need a minute to get used to having a beating heart again."
Bucky's breathing quickened, slowly sitting up and looking around the room. "Wh-who is that? Who's there?" He stuttered fearfully. His heart was pounding, and his entire body was tensed.
"Oh, crap, I'm doing that thing again. Here, just uh, just calm down and give me a second. I think I can just... There we go!" Suddenly, you appeared in the corner on top of a cabinet of medical supplies. You hopped down from the cabinets and rushed over to his bedside, eyes carefully searching him in a way that he couldn't quite understand. You were looking in direction, but you were looking more through him than at him. "Hey, hey, just calm down okay? Just breathe. Deep breaths, dude."
Bucky's jaw clenched, and he felt the energy rush back into his veins. "Who are you and what are you doing here?" He asked, voice hardening dangerously. The metal plates in his arm shifted as he flexed his hand. You looked down at it, raising an eyebrow and rolling your eyes.
"Okay, just so you know, I'm telling you this because I want to. I'm not scared of you," you replied, crossing your arms over your chest. "My name is (Y/N). I'm your guardian angel," you informed dramatically, grinning and wiggling your fingers in the air.
Bucky scoffed at you swinging his legs off of the bed and standing up, stretching and checking his body for any injuries once more. "Really? My guardian angel? Good one, but really. Who are you?"
"Of course. Of course you don't believe me. I swear, we get no credit nowadays. Even when we raise you ungrateful mortals from the dead you still refuse to believe. Thanks for that, bud. Great self esteem boost. And don't bother checking for any injuries. I got those taken care of, I know what I'm doing."
He furrowed his eyebrows and looked over at you, crossing his arms over his chest to mirror your posture. "Wait, you're serious about this..." He muttered, confused. You laughed, leaning against the wall.
"Sure am, pal. Is that going to be a problem?" You asked, raising an eyebrow. He huffed, rolling his eyes.
"What do you mean is that going to be a problem? Of course it won't be a problem, because you're going to leave me alone!" He insisted firmly. You laughed a bit, shaking your head. "What now?"
"You don't get it, do you?" You asked rhetorically, eyes glinting mischievously as you grinned. Bucky simply glared back at you. "I don't just go away. I never have, and I never will. I've protected you throughout your entire life. Remember when you fell out of that tree and broke your arm when you were ten?" Bucky's eyebrows furrowed at the mention of his childhood, nodding slowly. "You were going to land on your head, and you would've died on impact if your skull would've hit that rock. You knew it too. You could see the ground rushing towards your face, and you thought Steve was going to watch you die. But then you were able to turn just enough to land on your arm instead. The thing is, you didn't do that. I did that. I saved your life for the first time when you were ten, and I've been saving your daredevil butt ever since."
He stood stock still in front of you, confusion taking over his features. His lips were parted slightly, as if ready to speak, but they closed before any sound could escape his throat. He simple stared at you, wondering how you could ever know about the time he fell out of a tree. You couldn't be any more than 25, and Bucky was technically 98. "Who do you work for that gave you so much information about me?" He asked, a fearful tone in his voice that you knew was dangerous. Or, it would be if you were human.
"Okay, so I'm guessing I've completely lost you or something. Should we run through this whole situation again? Because I kind of liked the first run, it sounded super dramatic and I think I might've lost that mood," you complained. Bucky groaned, pinching the bridge of his nose.
"The only way I would ever believe you is if you gave me some proof. I'm having a pretty hard time believing that they would ever give you a halo. From what I've seen, you don't really act like an angel," he sassed, crossing his arms over his chest. His left arm folded over his right one, allowing the metal to shine brightly in the light of the medical room.
"Oh, so you've met other angels, have you? Well tell them hello and screw them, signed by (Y/N) with love. And we don't have halos, that would be weird. We do have wings, though, so that's pretty cool." You pushed off of the wall you were leaning against and began to wander the room, poking at of gauze and peeking inside drawers.
"Okay, so if I were to believe this whole guardian angel thing, what is it that you do?" Bucky asked, curiosity filling his tone. You looked over at him in surprise, but decided not to comment on his easy swaying towards belief.
"Well, a guardian angel is an angel that is assigned to protect and care for a specific human. Other animals have them too, but I would exactly be the best fit to protect a freaking otter or something. Anyways, only the most important people actually have a guardian angel, so anyone that can affect the set timeline of human history by oh, I don't know, falling out of a freaking tree, is given an angel. I was assigned to you, so I was born and raised for the sole purpose of protecting you. Once our human reaches a certain age, we're meant to reveal ourselves. Y'know, pop up in your life, protect you from right by your side, yadda yadda. But someone decided to fall off of a train at the exact same time that I was trying to take a break," you explained, taking a cotton ball out of a jar and pulling it apart.
"So you're telling me that I wasn't supposed to fall off of that train?" He asked, his voice rising as he spoke. You raised an eyebrow and turned to see Bucky standing with his fists clenched in anger.
"I thought you didn't believe in all of this angel crap?" You pointed out. He simply huffed in return. "Anyways, yes, technically it's my fault. You weren't supposed to get captured by HYDRA that day, but you were supposed to be captured at some point. So, I had to manipulate some people, take a few key people out to try to slow them down a little. I broke almost every rule in the book, including revealing myself to someone other than my assigned human first," you continued your story, and you didn't even have to look at Bucky to know that he would be opening his mouth to ask about your statement. "Sam. I contacted Sam Wilson to tell him where you were. Time was getting too messed up, and HYDRA was getting too smart for history to work out. I had to make sure SHIELD found you, and I'm now shunned by the other angels because of it."
The room was silent for a couple of minutes after you finished speaking, and at this point you were forced to turn and make sure Bucky was still there. Sure enough he was still there, and he had a solemn look on his face. You couldn't decipher what was causing his sudden mood change, but you could tell he was much calmer now. He took a couple of steps towards you, slowly reaching out and pulling you into a hug. "Thank you, (Y/N). Thank you for keeping me safe," he whispered. "And thank you for getting me out of HYDRA."
A smile slowly took over your face, and your arms wrapped around Bucky as well. You also move your wings to wrap them around him, and though he couldn't see them, you could see him relax even further as their warmth enveloped him. "I'll always try my best to keep you safe, Bucky. It's my job."
The sass is real with this reader tbh wow
