A crushing force slammed itself down onto your chest and forced the air from your lungs. Your eyes stung with the feeling of salty tears, and you could taste the familiar metallic tang of blood on your tongue as you clamped your teeth down on your bottom lip to cease its quivering. You sucked in a desperate breath of air in an attempt to ebb the pain radiating through your chest, but that didn't seem to fix anything.

Usually you would be utterly mortified to be walking down the elegant halls of the kingdom in a state like this, but truthfully you couldn't bring yourself to care. After the day you had had, you were sure that nothing could make this any worse. Your feet scraped carelessly along the ceramic floors of the palace. Your head was bowed as your eyes gazed pointlessly towards the ground.

'Why does it even matter?' You couldn't help but think. 'Why does it matter who I'm attracted to? Am I not still their son? Am I not still the same child they raised and cared for?

Your expression contorted into a bitter scowl as these thoughts crossed your mind. What right did your parents have to say who you could and couldn't be attracted to? Why did it seem to matter so much to the world that you liked men? It's not like it was contagious. You didn't grow horns and conjure up a pitchfork every time you kissed your boyfriend. Besides, you didn't even kiss your boyfriend where anyone could see you! So what was the issue with the two of you being together? Plus, was this really that much of a problem that your own parents would see it fit to disown you?

You desperately prayed that you would not pass King Silas or Captain Shepherd on your walk through the palace. King Silas would certainly bring some form of wrath down on you for showing weakness in a place like this, while the Captain would likely cling to you like a lost puppy in hopes that you would spill your guts to him and allow him to help you. You had nothing against David - god forbid if Jack ever heard you say that - but you simply didn't want to see him at that moment. You knew the Captain, and you knew that he would never just leave you to wander around on your own while you're obviously upset.

You breathed a small sigh of relief as you reached the prince's room. You fumbled around for the key you had received a year and a half ago from Jack when you realized your relationship was beginning to get serious. You both knew that you couldn't be seen going into his room together or going out on dates with each other, so he had offered you a key to his room so you could sneak in and wait for him to return from his meetings and princely business.

Today, however, you weren't the one left waiting. You opened the door to his room to be met with the sight of the young prince sitting quietly at his desk. He was scratching down some quick notes on what seemed to be another boring legal document that quickly lost your interest. His eyebrows were furrowed in concentration, and the tip of his tongue poked out of his mouth ever so slightly. If you weren't in such a terrible mood, you knew that you would have sat and admired him for a moment, but you couldn't even bring yourself to do something as simple as that.

At the sound of the door closing, Jack peered up from his work to look at you. His previously curious expression transformed into one of burning anger as his gaze landed on your shaking form. The prince stood and made his way over to you in a few long strides. He raised a careful hand to your cheek, his thumb swiping underneath your eyes to rid your cheeks of the salty tears.
