Chris Beck x Reader
Generic Chris Beck oneshot because I haven't given him enough love. Set after the Ares III mission because I'm not cool and can't think of anything to write while they're all in space and such, and it's also after the Ares V mission because I felt like it. OH! AND I BOUGHT MY TICKETS FOR CIVIL WAR TODAY SO IM SEEING IT MAY 6 YES
"Please tell me you're not going like that," your best friend ridiculed, a look of disgust on their face. They were laying on their stomach on your bed, their feet hovering precariously over your pillows and their head in their hands at the bottom of the bed. You rolled your eyes, spinning around in your very casual outfit.
"What's wrong with this?" You asked, walking over to your drawers and rummaging around for a pair of earbuds. You heard a scoff from behind you, along with some shuffling as your friend sat up.
"What's wrong with that? What's wrong with that? Everything is wrong with that! It's so... Blah! There are going to be guys there tonight! Guys that will look right past you if you're in a t-shirt and sweatpants!" They argued, flinging their hands in the air. You shook your head.
"But if I'm the only girl not all dressed up, then wouldn't I stand out?"
"Yes, but not all attention is good attention, (Y/N)." Their arms were crossed over their chest now, and you simply rolled your eyes again.
"Well if they're judging me for the way I'm dressed right now then I wouldn't want to date them anyways. If it disgusts them so much to see a girl comfortable then they can stay out of my life. Keep your bad vibes out of my cornflakes. I'm not interested."
"What does that even mean?"
"Don't know, I think I read it somewhere," you replied with a casual shrug. "But really, I don't care what people think. And for your information, I was going to go in a better outfit, but now I'm just going to change into jeans and be done because I enjoy watching you suffer."
They scowled at you, throwing a pillow in your general direction. You doubled over laughing as their shot missed completely. "Jerk!" They shouted jokingly. You just grinned at them and grabbed a pair of jeans from your closet. Who cares if you get weird looks?
~
You were sitting in a small circle of friends on the outskirts of the bustling party. You brushed a piece of hair out of your face and looked around, a bit bored of the conversation taking place. Half of your friends were sat on the couch, while the rest (including yourself) were on the floor in front of them. Your hands were flat against the floor behind you as you leaned back on them, and your legs were extended in front of you so your ankles were crossed.
One of your friends leaned down from their place on the couch and muttered quietly to you, "Don't look now, but there's a cute guy at your 3 o'clock that's totally into you." They leaned back again and grinned at you, smoothly getting back into the conversation. Your eyes widened a bit and you looked to the right a bit, eyes landing on the man that was staring at you. Your arms almost gave out when you realized that it was Doctor Chris Beck, flight surgeon of the Ares III mission. He had been your hero ever since you heard about the crew of the Ares III, and your friends had always teased you for your obsession with him and his work.
The same friend leaned over again and sighed. "Really? Your hero and crush for over 5 years and you're not introducing yourself? You're sitting in a group, it's highly unlikely he'll approach you. It's too intimidating. You have to go introduce yourself." You looked at them in slight horror at this statement, as you were sure you would never be able to get a word out to the man. They rolled their eyes at your reaction. "Just say hi, my name is (Y/N), and then start talking about how much you love that airy-space medical whatever. He'll love it!"
You scoffed, sitting up straight and crossing your arms over your chest. "Aerospace medicine? I understand forgetting aerospace, but you really couldn't remember medicine?"
"Oh just shut up and go!" They said with a grin, nudging you with their foot. You laughed bit, standing up and brushing off your shirt and jeans. You messed with the hem of your t-shirt as you made your way over to the bar Chris was sitting at. You tried to keep calm by thinking about how ridiculous it was that this mansion had a legitimate bar in it, bartender and all, and you even scoffed a little at the idea. What does the bartender do when the owners of the house don't want a drink? Stand there and look pretty?
You took a seat next to Chris, and you could feel his eyes on you as you waved for the bartender. He approached you and you ordered a drink, which he quickly set out in front of you. Before you could grab the money from your wallet, a hand had already placed a few bills on the counter. You looked up in confusion, your eyes meeting those of Doctor Chris Beck's once again.
"Sorry, I just couldn't help it. My name is Chris," he introduced himself, reaching his hand out to you. You took his hand a shook it, smiling.
"I, uh, I know. My name is (Y/N), and you're kind of my hero in aerospace medicine." Your words were just barely loud enough for him to hear over the noise of the party. He chuckled and tilted his head to the side a bit.
"You're a flight surgeon?"
You shook your head sadly. "No, I wish. I've always wanted to be one, but my parents didn't quite approve. For some reason I listened to them and now I'm stuck in one of those crappy dead end jobs that leaves you dreaming of bigger things when you're laying in bed at night." Chris nodded at this.
"I get that. I had always been really interested in space and medicine, so when I realized there was a job where I could have both I jumped at it. Now I've had enough space to last a lifetime," he replied with a laugh. You laughed as well, taking a sip of your drink. "Any other dreams that haven't been made a reality yet?"
"Tons, of course. But you just helped me fulfill a couple by being here. I've always wanted to not only meet you, but I've also wanted to have someone that's interested in the same things as me. All of my friends over there," you nodded your head back to your group that had quieted down enough to watch your conversation, "aren't very into science or anything, so it's great to finally meet someone who thinks it's cool."
Chris nodded and smiled at you. "I agree. Us flight surgeons need to stick together, huh?" He winked and you immediately looked down at the bar, your cheeks burning bright red. You bit your lip in an attempt to hide the smile on your face. You could hear Chris chuckle.
"I'm not really a flight surgeon..." You mumbled. "No real training, no formal medical education."
He shrugged, taking a drink of his beer. "Doesn't matter to me. You've got passion, you've got heart, you've got drive. You could be flight surgeon if you had the chance, so in my eyes, you are one. Welcome to the club!" He tossed his hands in the air in a celebratory fashion, and you laughed. He really was adorable, and not only that, he was smart, nice, and funny. It was like a match made in Heaven.
You spent the rest of the night talking and joking around with Chris, and by the end of the night you had exchanged numbers and shared half of your life stories with each other. You went home with your friends, making sure to rub it in your best friend's face that your outfit worked. As you were getting into bed, you heard your phone buzz with a new text message.
Had a great time tonight! Goodnight, sleep well! -Beck
I hope you enjoyed! I really do love Chris Beck, but I never know what to do with his character. I've seen The Martian tons of times, but I don't really know science-y stuff, so it's hard for me to actually write about what happens on the Ares mission. Also, I'm going to start putting if oneshots are a request or not, because requests will usually (please please please note the usually) be put before my own personal ideas.
Stay street, stay unlit, stay alive.
In progress:
-Sebastian Stan - Coming Home (REQUEST - may take a bit longer than usual)
-Bucky Barnes - Undercover
-Sebastian Stan - Soulmate
