Dan stirred and shivered. He rolled over and, half asleep, slung his arm over Phil, moving closer to him for warmth.
Phil jumped awake at the sudden contact. He was relieved it was just Dan, but was uneasy with how comfortable he felt. He wondered what the time was and glanced through the window, noticing the sky was slightly lighter. He sat up and Dan's arm fell into his lap. Blushing, he quickly pushed Dan's arm away and moved towards the car door.
"Where are you going?" Dan mumbled sleepily, his eyes only half open.
"Uh... I need to pee." Phil replied and opened the door. He climbed out and stretched, then looked around for a bush to hide behind. He stopped on his way back as he saw Dan sitting on top of the car. "What are you doing up there?"
Dan gestured for Phil to sit next to him.
Phil attempted to climb up the car and slipped. Dan held out his hand to help him and Phil stared at it for a moment, then took hold allowing Dan to pull him up. Dan pointed out to the distance, "The sun's rising." He stated.
Phil looked over the hedges and saw bright rays of light seeming to rise up from the ground and the horizon was turning a light orangey-yellow. There was a moment when it seemed the entire world held it's breath, then the sun came up and a flock of birds flew across the sky.
They sat in silence, marvelling at the view, until Phil suddenly realised his hand was still interlaced with Dan's. He let go and gently slid off the roof. "That was pretty."
"Mmm." Was Dan's reply.
"We should try to find somewhere with food."
Dan turned his head in the other direction, "There's some buildings over there."
They got back into the front seats and drove away. Half an hour later they reached the small cluster of buildings Dan had seen from the car rooftop. Phil's stomach grumbled angrily and he was relieved to see a diner among the buildings. They ordered food and ate in silence.
They asked one of the waitresses for directions back to a main road, then got back into the car. Dan turned the key, the engine spluttered and died. He tried again, but nothing happened.
"Are you kidding me?" Dan punched the steering wheel.*
"The mechanic isn't back til tomorrow, he was called out on an emergency." One of the waitresses stated after Dan and Phil explained their situation.
"Great." Dan muttered, wanting to punch something again.
"There's a motel just a short way down the road." The waitress offered.
"Thanks." Phil smiled politely and directed Dan out of the diner. "Well, we might as well see if there are any rooms available. Unless you want to sleep in the car again."
Dan glared at Phil, then sighed. "Fine. Let's go look."
They found the motel not too far away.
"You're in luck. We've got one room left." The cheerful woman behind the reception desk smiled at them.
They stopped dead as they found just one bed in the room.
"Maybe in here." Phil opened a door in the corner.
"That's the bathroom." Dan said.
"Oh." Phil pulled the door shut, crinkling his nose at the smell. "They don't have any other rooms."
Dan sat on the double bed. "Can this trip get any better?" He asked sarcastically, "I lost my bag, we got lost on a creepy road, we had to sleep in a car, now this!"
"I'll sleep on the floor." Phil offered, feeling guilty, "Hey, at least we can charge our phones."
Dan plugged his phone in and turned it on, his eyes lighting up, then darkening again almost instantly, "Still no signal though." He flopped back onto the bed, letting out an exasperated groan.
Phil switched on the small TV and sat on the chair in the corner of the room.
