Soobin's eyes fluttered open in the dorm room's darkness as a small creaking had woken him up from his sleep.
Slightly creeped out, he looked to the side and saw the figure of a teenager exiting and closing the heavy, creaky door.
Soobin immediately sat up, his pupils growing huge when he realized that Beomgyu wasn't on his bed.
Had the men dragged him out?
But as Soobin's gaze traveled to the floor below him, his heart slowed down with relief.
There were footprints smoldered into the wooden floor of their dorm. Soobin instantly connected the dots and realized that the small footprints belonged to Beomgyu's delicate feet.
Without waking Kai and Taehyun up from their well-deserved beauty sleep, Soobin sat up and climbed off the bed.
His webbed feet weren't as sleek, he almost fell to the side if it hadn't been for now spikeless tail keeping him balanced.
Terror filled his entire being when he saw Taehyun sitting up from his bed. His hair was ruffled to the side and his eyes were squinted and dazed. "Soobin. . . What are you doing?" The 17-year old yawned, clearly still asleep.
"I'm, um. . . Gonna get. . . Bread." Soobin thought quickly before Taehyun finally lied back down and cuddled against Kai, who lightly stretched before hugging his waist. "Whatever Mr. Fish. . . Don't get. . . Eaten alive. . ."
A loud snore followed Taehyun's rather disturbing warning, but Soobin just shrugged it off and took it as typical Taehyun having dreams about how to take over and enslave every being in the world.
After hearing multiple snores, Soobin slowly opened the door, and slipped out of the dorm.
It was forbidden to leave the dorm room whenever you weren't called to be experimented on, but it was extra dangerous to leave at night and wander around. . . Especially when guards were scattered all around the facility, marching and guarding every hall and anything that could be close to an escape route.
Soobin followed Beomgyu's footsteps cautiously. He looked to the side and quirked his brow with confusion at the fact that there weren't any guards at all.
But he just shrugged it off once more. He's a very careless creature, the fewer guards there were the better, so why worry?
He opened an emergency door and carefully went up the stairs. The once white and sleek steps of the staircase were now black; bits of blood painted and contrasted against the black, and the smell of freshly cooked meat entered Soobin's nostrils.
His mouth would've watered and his inner predator would've thrown itself at the meal. . . If it hadn't been for the fact that the beautiful and tempting aroma came from at least ten dead guards.
Their bodies had been dragged and piled up carefully against a wall; their flesh had been blackened and burned, so much that part of the bones were showing here and there, and you could also see flecks of skin that were basically melting off the bodies.
Soobin shivered, now completely grossed out at the horrible sight. I mean. . . He'd seen what Beomgyu's powers could do, but he didn't know how murderous those flames could turn if the lovely and energetic teenager was brushed the wrong way.
But, hey. . . At least he knew where all the guards had gone to, and at least Beomgyu was smart enough to kill them before he could get captured and beaten.
He stepped over the dead bodies that had tried to capture Beomgyu before being smoldered, and slowly opened the door that led to the roof.
~~~
Beomgyu hugged his legs as he looked up at the stars in the intoxicated blue sky. It was late at night, but sleep hadn't been able to find him and embrace him, so he had scurried over to the roof and watch the stars until he grew tired of it.
It was something he used to do all the time. . . It was something that Yeonjun used to do all the time.
He grabbed the hood of his hoodie and pulled it over his head. He brought his legs together and his his face again them before taking a deep breath.
A faint but distinct scent still lingered over the soft fabric. It had been a scent that he had missed for so long. . . The rather strong scent of clean pine trees and morning flowers. The scent of the one he had admired for so long. . . The scent of the only boy he had fallen for without realizing it.
Yeonjun. . . Beomgyu squeezed his eyes closed as a small tear ran down his cheek when he looked up at the sky once more. Was the older still watching over him and protecting him as he had promised all those years ago?
"Beomgyu. . . ?"
The 18-year old gasped with surprise. He immediately turned around, the hood of his hoodie falling off his head as his eyes met Soobin's.
Soobin walked towards him before his eyes got fixated on an item he hadn't seen since Yeonjun died. The 19-year old sat down and brushed his webbed hand against the fabric of the hoodie that Beomgyu wore. "You kept it."
"Of course I kept it," Beomgyu sighed, throwing the hood over his head once more to hide his rosy cheeks and pout. "Yeonjun gave it to me."
"What are you doing here? We're supposed to be asleep at the dorm with the other two."
Beomgyu let out a grunt, reaching for his hoodie pocket and giving Soobin a pair of black shredded silk. "I would go back, but I'm more scared of Taehyun's fury than some dumb guards that are easy to kill as a mouse."
Soobin scratched his head as he looked at the destroyed pair of mittens that Taehyun had let Beomgyu borrow.
The 17-year old may have shorter legs than them, but his mouth and gaze could easily kill anyone who dared to poke at his nerves.
Beomgyu let out a frown, his gaze fixing once again on the greenish-navy blue sky. "Plus, I don't want to sleep, not until I find out which star belongs to Yeonjun."
Soobin's eyes immediately softened, he stretched his arm and curled it around Beomgyu, pulling the younger closer and embracing him like he always did whenever any of them were upset.
He sort of knew the pain that Beomgyu was probably going through. He felt it every time he saw a bruise paint Kai's fragile body or whenever Taehyun would come back half-conscious. But of course, the type of pain that the poor younger felt was a thousand times greater. . . After all, him and the others had known that Beomgyu and their former friend had something going on that couldn't be just a friendship or a type of admiration.
Beomgyu curled his arm around Soobin's scaled torso, trying to find the same warmth that Yeonjun had once given him. It didn't feel the same. . . But at least he had one of his friends to help him cure his still broken heart.
