A Royal Yes Under Rajasthani Skies
The golden hues of the Udaipur sunset melted into the silken lake, reflecting a serenity that seemed made for fairy tales. Along the banks of Lake Pichola, where the waters whispered secrets to the breeze, everything was perfectly arranged for a moment that would define lifetimes. A maroon canopy stood adorned with marigolds, jasmine garlands, and hundreds of twinkling fairy lights. The pier had been decorated like a dreamscape—floating diyas lit up the water, flickering like stars that had descended to bless the lovers.
Back at the palace suite, Rihi stood in front of the mirror, her fingers lightly grazing the soft maroon Jaipur-print maxi dress that Gauravi had gifted her. The dress hugged her in the right places and flowed like a river of heritage around her dusky skin. Her kohl-rimmed eyes sparkled, her cheeks glowed with anticipation, and her lips had that quiet curve that comes from feeling deeply loved.
"Where are we going again?" she asked Aashna, who was fidgeting with her phone.
"You'll see," Aashna said, hiding her giddy smile.
The car drove her through the winding lanes of Udaipur and stopped just before the private pier of the lakeside hotel. Rihi stepped out, and just as she adjusted the pleats of her dress, the entire area went dark.
"What the..." she whispered, her voice caught halfway between confusion and curiosity.
Suddenly, she felt a warm hand slip into hers. The touch was familiar, magnetic. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. Shubman.
"I’d know these fingers anywhere," she whispered.
A soft chuckle reached her ears, and just as she turned, the lights slowly came back on—in stages, like theatre curtains being lifted one by one. First the canopy lit up, then the floating candles shimmered, and finally, a spotlight focused on one man—kneeling.
Shubman Gill, dressed in an ivory short kurta and jeans , looked up at her with eyes that had waited through storms, heartbreaks, and victories.
"Rihi," he began, voice slightly trembling, "I have loved you since the first time you punched me for stealing your fries. Through every match, every celebration, every moment of doubt, your name was my prayer. Will you be my forever? My now, my tomorrow, and my always? Will you marry me?"
Rihi froze, tears blurring her vision. Time slowed. She blinked once, and the only word that escaped her lips was, "Yes."
The moment she said it, a wave of joy burst forth as Shubman slid the intricately crafted gold and diamond ring onto her finger. The petals of the lotus shone with elegance, the kundan droplets sparkling in agreement.
And just like magic, out from behind the trees, jharokhas, and garden pillars popped their family of misfits: Aashna, Abhishek, Shahneel, Komal, Khushpreet, Ishan, and Agnidev. They clapped, cheered, whistled, and tossed rose petals in the air.
"Well, it's about time!" yelled Khushpreet.
"Finally! She said yes without punching you!" Aashna teased.
Shahneel wiped a tear, smiling through it all. "My brother's getting married. God help this poor girl."
Shubman pulled Rihi up and kissed her forehead. "Di, help me convince Maa and Papa, please. They’re going to lose it when they find out I did this behind their backs."
Everyone laughed.
Abhishek threw his arm around Aashna’s shoulders. "So... while we’re on the topic of weddings and doing things behind parents' backs..."
Aashna narrowed her eyes. "Abhishek. Don’t you dare."
"Why not? Let's talk to our parents too. double wedding. Baraat on horses. Dance on punjabi tracks . Let’s make it official."
Aashna turned crimson, hiding her face in his shoulder. "Why do you always do this in front of people?!"
"Because your blush is public property now," he grinned.
Everyone roared in laughter.
The group posed for pictures. One where Rihi held her ringed hand up while Shubman looked at her like she was the eighth wonder of the world. Another where Aashna was half-hidden behind a pillar, peeking with one eye as Abhishek pretended to look shocked. Even Ishan lifted Komal in a Bollywood pose just to keep the madness going.
They danced. They ate. They laughed until their stomachs ached.
As the evening turned into night and the stars blinked awake above them, Shubman took Rihi's hand again.
"You do know this is forever, right?"
She nodded, leaning into him. "With you, forever sounds too short."
They stood at the edge of the pier, surrounded by love, friends, and dreams made real.
And far in the background, the lake whispered again, as if promising them that this was only the beginning.
