Well, it would have been an excellent surprise if, 1) Taehyung hadn't screeched at the top of his lungs, the sound echoing in the confined space of the room, almost deafening the others. 2) Attacked his wishers with pillows of varying sizes, one hitting the cake Jungkook was holding.
In the end, Jungkook was covered in chocolate cake, Taehyung was still screaming, hidden under the blanket and the others just shook their heads in dismay.
It was almost too funny to be sad.
It had all been Jungkook's idea.
As soon as he had returned from the mall, he had sent a text to Namjoon, Jin, Hoseok, Jimin and Yoongi and planned a surprise at midnight to wish Taehyung.
The plan seemed perfect. Knock on his door at 12, walk in singing the birthday song, carrying his favorite chocolate cake. But unfortunately, they had been oblivious to the fact that Taehyung had binge watched the most terrifying horror movies of the year. Otherwise, everything would have been a huge success.
"Taehyung! TAEHYUNG! Calm down! It's just us!" Yoongi ran up to the frightened boy and pulled the blanket away, only to find him trembling violently.
Seeing the familiar face, Taehyung came back to his senses. He shakily sat up and sighed in relief.
He looked around the room, a tiny bit embarrassed, scanning all the faces. All were smiling, except one. That particular one seemed to be covered in something dark and goopy from head to toe and had a deep frown etched on his face.
Jin flicked the light switch on and Taehyung instantly let out a giggle when he realized that the one covered in the dark substance was none other than Jungkook.
The others tried to suppress their laughs as they heard Jungkook grunt.
Before the youngest could show displeasure any further, the oldest started to promptly sing the birthday song, enthusiastically clapping his hands. The others got the clue and straightaway joined him. Jungkook wasn't planning on ruining the moment either, he too joined in and all of them sang in harmony.
Taehyung's nerves had calmed down. He felt a warmth in his chest to see his friends standing around him and happily singing. His birthdays were never anything special. Just share some cake with his friends and his mother would make some special stew.
But today, he felt giddy. He felt loved and special.
He smiled so wide that his cheeks hurt. He almost started to tear up with joy.
Hoseok was the first to pull him into a tight hug, almost crushing the younger out of excitement.
He was followed by Jin and Namjoon both giving him side hugs. Yoongi shook his hand and almost hugged him before he was pulled away by Jimin, who pounced on Taehyung and tackled him in a bear hug. The two boys giggling like teenagers meeting each other after ages.
"Ahem" Jungkook coughed, who was waiting in line to wish the birthday boy. He was desperate to wash off the sticky chocolate covering him.
Jimin swiftly moved away to allow the youngest to come forward.
Taehyung got off the bed and stood up. He didn't want Jungkook to transfer the chocolate onto his sheets.
The birthday boy shyly stuck his hand out with a sheepish grin, avoiding Jungkook's eyes and mainly trying not to get close to the mess. He felt guilty for the state the other was in but it was hard not to laugh at the comical sight.
Jungkook was obviously not going to let Taehyung get off easy, he had a plan in his mind.
He presented a nasty smirk and with not much effort, pulled Taehyung into a bone-crushing hug. The latter squealed as Jungkook playfully rubbed his face on Taehyung's neck, smearing the muggy substance all over. Taehyung struggled for freedom but he was no match for Jungkook. The rest had no intention to get involved so they simply chuckled from a safe distance.
Ultimately, Jin felt pity for the poor birthday boy and he stepped in, separating the two. Both boys looked like they had fallen into a swamp. Faces smeared with the dark brown cream and childish grins plastered on their faces.
"Okay that's enough for tonight" Hoseok announced as he gradually stopped laughing.
"Yeah, we can continue the celebrations in the morning" Jin suggested, helping Namjoon clean up the mess on the floor.
Soon, all of them cleaned up the room and went off to their respective beds.
This birthday was going to be one, that Taehyung would never forget.
