Chapter 28 - Anything but a pink sports car

Thor stood and walked over to join Loki and patted his arm in reassurance. "She will be okay brother. You will get your chance to speak to her" he said.
Loki nodded and returned to his room whilst everyone else returned to their breakfast and coffee.

The elevator ride seemed like an eternity for Tony. It dinged and opened out into the medical bay entrance where people were walking around like ants going about their day.
Bruce led pepper and Tony to Y/N's bay and ushered them in.

Tony stood by her bedside and couldn't take his eyes off of her. She was off of a ventilator but still had an oxygen tube in her nose along with several IV's in her hands and arms. She was broken.

"So do we know the damage?" Tony asked.
"She has 10 broken ribs, a punctured lung, severe burns to her neck, torso and arms and legs. Her heart and her brain seem to be stable. Her left ankle is shattered and her right shoulder has a hair line fracture. She also has a small fracture in her skull and..." Bruce went to carry on but Tony put his hand up to stop him.
"I think we get it. She's broken. God why didn't we find her sooner." Tony began to cry.
"Tony stop it. None of this is any of our fault." Pepper frowned at him.

"Can I have some time alone with her. Please" Tony pulled up a chair and took Y/N's hand in his. Bruce and Pepper nodded and left to stand in the corridor outside and look from the window.

"He's heartbroken Bruce. He feels like this is all his fault" pepper said to Bruce.
"I know. Pepper I think we need to prepare Tony for the worst." Bruce looked at Pepper with watery eyes. From sadness and lack of sleep. "She might not wake up. We nearly lost her last night and there's only so much the team down here can do. I'm so sorry.. I'm.." pepper leaned in to hug Bruce.
"Shh it's okay. Can you go let the team know. And get some sleep please. Thank you Bruce"
He nodded and left to return upstairs.

"Y/N I'm so sorry. This is all my fault. I should have.... I never..." Tony began to cry. It's the only thing he seemed to be able to do on his own right now.

A few hours went by and Tony wouldn't leave Y/N's side. Pepper returned to the room to try and pry him away.
"Tony? Come on let's give Y/N a break, we'll come back tomorrow" pepper walked over to Tony and put her hand on his shoulder.
He didn't respond.
"Hunny, let's go get some coffee. We'll come back down I promise" she sighed. Tony nodded and he reluctantly let go of her hand. The pair headed back up stairs to go get coffee.

Back upstairs , Bruce had explained to everyone Y/N's condition. They were all in shock. Nat was crying and being comforted by Clint , Steve and Thor were in shock and sat in silence. Loki stood by the doorway with an angry look on his face then returned to his bedroom alone.

"Poor kid" Steve sighed.
"Hows Tony?" Nat dared to ask.
"He's... not good." Bruce replied.

The elevator door dinged and pepper nudged Tony forward to the kitchen.

"Tony, pepper. Are you okay?" Steve walked over to their side. Tony ignored him and carried on to the coffee machine in the kitchen in silence.
Pepper gave a reassuring look to Steve and patted his arm. "It's going to take time" she said.

Loki entered the room in silence and went to the kitchen to grab a coffee.
Out of the corner of his eye Tony saw Loki enter. He was mad. It was like a storm was brewing and the lightening was about to strike.
"You!" He turned to Loki and grabbed him by his collar.
"Tony no!" Pepper shouted
"You , you are the reason she's there. It should be you down there not her!" Tony shouted. Steve and Thor ran to break the pair apart.
Thor grabbed Loki who shrugged him off.
"Let go of me!" He shouted. "I am the reason she is still alive you imbecile" he growled.
"No , you are the cause of this. She doesn't deserve this she..." Tony was now being held back by pepper and Steve
"I never said she deserved this!!! No one did. I told you my reasons. Get it into your thick skull you piece of..." Thor grabbed Loki by the arm and dragged him back to his room away from Tony.

"Brother enough! No one needs this right now. We are all upset. We need to stay strong for Y/N" Thor said whilst trying to calm Loki down.
"Of course. No one needs this. You are all upset. You are all the victims here. Never mind me or Y/N. It's all about it you guys" he taunted.
"Loki..." Thor sighed and grabbed Lokis shoulders. "I believe you. I believe that you are hurting. I trust you. But please just leave Tony alone. He can't handle his mortal emotions. Just stay away. And please for the love of Odin dont go to Y/N." He instructed.
Loki nodded and returned to his bedroom.

Tony shrugged pepper and Steve off of him. "I'm fine. Stop wrapping me in bubble wrap already."
Pepper looked at Steve and nodded who then returned to the sofas with Clint and Thor. Bruce had left the room to go get some sleep.
"I'm going back downstairs" Tony said whilst grabbing his coffee in a flask.
"Tony maybe stay up here for a bit longer , we can order food, we can.."
"Pepper just leave it. I'll come back up when I'm ready. I just need to be alone" he interrupted pepper and returned to the elevator.

He headed back to the med bay and into Y/N's room where she still lay unconscious. One of the doctors was tending to her.
"Is everything okay?" Tony asked.
"Yes , we're just upping her pain killers" she replied. She smiled at Tony and left the two alone.

Tony sighed and sat in the chair next to Y/N's bedside and sipped on his coffee.
"Kid when you're better I'll buy you anything you want. You want a car , you can have it, a trip to Disney world, it's yours, just don't expect me to ride it's a small world. If you don't want to go on missions anymore that is fine too. You can stay behind and be the brains of the mission" Tony went on and on for several minutes.

"A new car sounds nice" Tony looked up after hearing the croaky voice. Y/N's eyes flickered open.
"Y/N" he smiled squeezing her hand tighter.
"So, what car are you going to buy me?" She smiled.
"Whatever car you want. Just not a pink sports car. That's not going in the garage" Tony laughed.
"How're you feeling kid? Or is that a stupid question?"
"Not great. How long have I been out?" She asked trying to sit up but wincing from the pain and quickly stayed down.
"Easy, stay put." Tony put his hand out to keep her still "a few days. You ... Erm... you basically died twice. Which is once more than me so you're in the lead on the death front." Tony tried to lighten the mood but he could see Y/N's smile fade.
"Tony I'm sorry" she looked at Tony with tears in her eyes.
"You're sorry? What for ? None of this is your fault Y/N. None of it." Tony was irritated but knew he couldn't be mad at her after her ordeal.
"I just ... i don't know." She was starting to feel sleepy and yawned.
"Look kid get some sleep. Even though you've slept loads ! We'll talk tomorrow okay?" Tony leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. She nodded and was soon back to sleep.

Tony smiled and returned to the elevator to go back upstairs. The team, including Loki were sat watching tv.

"Is everything okay ?" Steve asked.
"Yes , yes everything's fine. She's awake. Well, was awake, she's fallen asleep. She spoke" Tony was like a child at Christmas.
The team smiled and sighed in relief.
"She's gonna be okay. I said we would talk more tomorrow" pepper walked to Tony's side and gave him the biggest hug. For the first time since coming home , the team felt like they were able to relax.

Night fell and everyone returned to their bedrooms to get a much needed rest. Loki stayed in the living room and mulled over his thoughts.

*Loki's POV*

She's okay. I should go see her. Do I go see her? Will she want to see me? What do I do if stark sees me go to her side. He'll kill me.
No. I'm going to go see her. She has to know how I feel. She has to let me explain myself.

She needs to know.
