(REVELATION SPOILERS IF YOU CARE)
As the main character of the series, I don't think any of you (or me) would have expected Gate to end up as the main villain and end up being the bane of existence. When Hero was written, it was the closest I got to Gate being evil, with good intentions. He let his obsession with Delilah, and his obsession with being loved get ahold of him, and take over him. Another example of how my own obsession with a girl nearly ruined my life completely. Fortunately, I was able to rid her of my mind, and now here I am. Gate would of course be shown the error of his ways by Echo-8. Except this time, the He gets the She. Lucky bastard. In August, after writing the Trinity Trilogy, I began thinking of suicide once again like the fool I am. This of course trickled into Gate's character, and Revelation's concept was born. Turning Gate from a true Guardian, into a broken, fallen hero. This would lead to his suicide, which I presented to some of the other Destiny writers. Of course, this was when I was not some kind of monster to them and my honor and respect remained for my efforts in Part 5. I don't care anymore about getting it back, but I shouldn't get off topic. The plan was to break Gate throughout the Andromeda trilogy, and then he will unleash the power of the Celestials given to him by Mazora, and use it for unspeakable acts.
The idea of Zelus was born from Part 1. Not when I wrote it but when Gate received his power gift from Mazora. The Celestials all got to choose what they used their power for. Dolos created a world of wonder, Xerxes wasted it foolishly overpowering Mazora, and Mazora used it to become a Guardian and try and live a life without his brothers and father. Gate, losing everything, gave up his life to this power, giving in his evil and pouring his wrath of the universe that took from him. He was a fool, and selfish. It's tragic really, but power easily blinds a man.
One question I actually think one or two of you may of asked was why Gate still murdered Delilah, even though he would kill for her back. What's the point of trying for love anymore? He was empty, and very sadly, he always believed the Delilah that came back from Riven's Timed Death, was not the true her, and that is why he had no remorse. He forced himself to believe she was not the girl he once loved so true, but something like a clone.
Gate is me in a lot of ways. In a lot of ways, I based my life off of him. He was like my reflection for a long time. Gate is a tragic character, a man who lost everyone, and became lost in his own thoughts, literally, leading to his downfall. Alone, with nearly all existence gone, just him, floating, staring at the stars.
