Sebastian went in to kiss me again but I stopped him, placing my thumb against his lips.
"What's wrong?" he said.
"Take out your wand please," I told him. "Help me find my wand."
He did as I asked, but had a look of confusion on his face. His cheeks were still red from the kiss, and I assumed mine were as well. "Can you tell me why you stopped?"
I finally found my wand a few feet away and picked it up. "I see it again," I said. "The magic traces. Up ahead."
"Really?" he questioned.
"Yes, let's keep moving. I want to see what's ahead."
We walked forward, and I followed the little swirls of magic that led the way. Up ahead, the cave tunnel was filled with a red glow. That's where it was leading.
What is this place?
As we trekked forward, I began to hear a heated conversation between two people. Sebastian and I shared a look, telling me that he heard it too. At the same time, we both extinguished our lights and put ourselves under the disillusionment charm.
We crept forward silently until we got to a big cavern at the end of the tunnel.
It was a huge room illuminated in red light that seemed to come from the crystals that covered the surrounding walls; they hung down from the ceiling as well, pointed down towards the floor. All around the crystals, I saw the familiar swirling of the dark magic that Isadora had been taking from people and storing- the same magic that Ranrok had tried to harness.
How the hell did this all get here?
I crept forward until the source of the voices was revealed. It was two men, who were arguing. They both appeared to be the exact opposite of each other; one was incredibly tall and bulky, and the other was very depleted in height and width. I began to listen to their conversation.
"There's no safe way to harness this!" the bulky one exclaimed.
"Well the bloody goblins managed to do it, there's got to be a way," said the other, throwing his hands in the air.
"They used goblin metal, you dunce. Try finding a goblin willing to help us. You know how they are."
Sebastian lightly tugged the sleeve of my robe. "We should get out of here, now," he whispered.
"Not yet," I ordered.
I tuned back in to the other conversation.
"Look, we all saw what happened to Rookwood for working with them. That only got him killed," said the smaller one.
"It wasn't the goblins that killed him, Christopher," the other stated. "It was that blasted student."
"Do you think she'd start causing issues if we continued with this? I'd hate to go against her after what she did a few years ago."
"She might not even be here still," the tall one offered. "Regardless, we shouldn't be afraid of a measly student."
Sebastian began to slowly creep back the way we came, whispering for me to follow. He was right, it was probably best if we left.
But I was definitely coming back. I needed to see what they were up to.
Sebastian suddenly tripped backwards, and the sound echoed through the cavern.
"Who's there?" said the tall one, his deep voice booming across the cavern.
I looked over to Sebastian, whose cloaking charm was no longer in place. They looked directly at him and started running towards where we stood.
"Come here, you little cunt," he said. Sebastian turned toward me, and I relinquished my charm as well, pointing my wand towards the two of them.
"Don't come any closer," I warned. Sebastian was now standing beside me with his wand drawn as well.
"It's her, David," said the small one said, who I now knew was named Christopher. "That's the student that killed him. I was there, we all saw it."
"Don't be dumb, I was there too. We can take a couple of students."
I don't think they could.
I could feel the magic in the room strengthening me. Maybe it was the alcohol that was still in my blood talking, I felt like I could take them
"Incendio!" shouted the big one, who had been revealed as David. He launched a wave of fire at us, but I brought my wand around and blocked it.
Christopher was launching basic casts at Sebastian who was blocking them with ease. It seemed the only one to worry about was David.
"Flippendo!" I shouted, pointing my wand to Christopher. He flipped through the air and landed on his arse, scooting back and away from the fight.
"Stand up, you bloody coward! Help me finish these cunts off!" Shouted David. I turned my attention back to him and started to cast spells at him.
I was using the magic in the room, using its strength to push them farther back in the cavern. It's been so long since I've felt like this- with this magic coursing through me.
The last time was when I faced off against Ranrok, and the extra boost is what allowed me to do so at all.
Both of them were finally backing off as Sebastian and I advanced, pushing them farther into the cavern. Christopher suddenly shot off down another tunnel at the other side of the cave. David let out an annoyed grunt and followed suit, chasing his partner into the dark tunnel.
"Don't think this is over, you child!" he shouted back as he left.
I didn't plan on letting it be over.
"Y/n, let's go!" says Sebastian, who was already down the tunnel.
We jogged back through the cave, not stopping to catch our breaths until we were out of the cave and a good distance away.
"They used to work for Rookwood," I exclaimed. That's how they know about that... But I'm curious to know how that got there in the first place."
"The cave didn't look like that last time I was there," Sebastian told me. "I swear, I wasn't trying to lead us into anything like that."
"I know, it's okay. But I want to find out more about the cave, and about those two men."
"We could always ask around town," Sebastian said.
"That's a good start," I replied.
This made me think to the last time I encountered something like this. Last time I wasn't alone- last time Professor Fig was with me, helping me figure out what came next.
This little excursion was starting to unbury a lot of memories that I thought I'd let go of a long time ago.
