As soon as I closed the door on him, I slid down to the floor and let out a shaky breath. A single tear tickled my cheek as it fell from my eye, and I quickly wiped it away.
Now was not the time to be weak.
I wanted to show him, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. This new letter I'd received from Charles, he'd make me turn it in straight away, and then there would be no way for me to ensure his safety. I pulled the crumpled parchment from my pocket and re-read the letter I'd received on my pillow the night before.
My Dearest y/n,
Though I am not surprised at your unwillingness to give me the results I seek, I have to follow through with my plans.
I have many methods of getting what I want, and while you think you and your friends are safe within the walls of that castle, I assure you that none of you are. If I wanted to get to you, I could. So it's in the best interest of the people that you love, that you give me what you want.
Tomorrow night, you must meet me at the location I provided at the bottom of this letter. If not, I will take special interest in making sure your life and the lives of those you hold dear become a living hell. I won't simply kill them, no- that's way too easy.
Tomorrow night, you will help me harvest a store of that magic and wield it alongside me to carry out the first steps of my plan. If you do not show up, I can assure you that the consequences will be far worse than you ever could have imagined. After all, I can't do this without you. I will have you, one way or another. I need you. I could give you anything you ever wanted. Love, power, glory, safety- anything. I will be there for you in ways that the Sallow boy could never. All you have to do is trust me, darling.
Best wishes,
Charlie XX
There was no way I could risk them getting hurt. I was supposed to meet with him tonight. I had to. I'm not letting him get to anyone.
I quickly changed into some more comfortable clothing and armed myself with some wiggenweld and my wand. I pulled on a dark robe and took a deep breath. It wasn't quite nightfall yet, so I had some time to kill.
If only Sebastian had been up to coming with me. I hoped that he'd want to assist me, but my attempts were futile. Unlike what I'd previously believed, he didn't understand. No one would. This wasn't about me playing some part trying to look like a hero. This was more than that. This wasn't about me in the slightest.
Suddenly, I heard the door begin to open. i pulled my robe over me to hide my clothing. Whoever it was, I didn't want them knowing that I was planning to leave. I grabbed a book and sat on my bed and pretended to be busy.
"Get lost," I heard someone say, as the door opened. It was Imelda. She quickly came inside and rolled her eyes upon seeing me.
"Are you and lover boy out there having a fight or something?" she sighed.
"What?" I replied, looking up from my book. "Sebastian's out there?"
"Yeah, he's camped in front of the door and is refusing to leave. He's going to get in trouble for being in the girl's hall this late."
"Not my problem," I scoffed, turning my eyes back to my book.
"You didn't break up with him, did you?" she questioned. She was going through her schoolbag, pulling out books and assignments as she spoke.
"No, nothing like that."
"Good," she sighed, flopping down on her bed. "Being stuck inside all day is miserable enough, i don't know that I could deal with a moody Sebastian too."
I groaned inwardly at that. I knew it was my fault that she wasn't allowed to be out practicing quidditch right now.
I'd left the team a few weeks ago, as I couldn't handle the added stress with everything going on. Imelda had been permitted to be outside for scheduled practices and games, as teachers were present for both of those. But there wouldn't be any extra practicing for her, which I knew was how she liked to spend all of her extra time.
As I sat there, pretending to read, about a half an hour later, Nerida came into the room. "Just let me in, please," I heard Sebastian say, as the door was opened.
"If she wanted you in here, I'm sure she'd let you in herself," Nerida replied. She swiftly closed the door behind her. "Did you break up with him or something? He's out there grovelling on the floor."
"Still?" Imelda piped in. "Pathetic. What did you do, anyways?" she said, turning to me.
"We had a bit of a tiff earlier, but nothing too serious," I lied. I mean it wasn't a bad fight or anything, but the subject itself was a rather sensitive one. "We don't fight often."
"Wait for him to start bringing you treats and gifts before you make up," Imelda laughed. "Then we can all get something out of his annoying presence."
Nerida also laughed, and even I couldn't help but chuckle lightly. I did feel slightly bad for what happened, but he needed to know that I wasn't going to be stopped. He knows I wouldn't be able to live with the consequences otherwise.
