I pointed my wand at Charles and took a deep breath.
Before I could react, more people were at my side fighting with me. It was my friends. I guess they saw what was happening and decided to jump in. Someone was pushing a wand in my hand, so I took it and abandoned the one I was given.
I wish that they hadn't decided to jump in. Charles took notice once the extra amount of spells were being launched toward the remaining guardian and looked back at me. He saw my friends. He knew they were there. I grunted in frustration.
If only they knew what I was about to do, maybe they would have waited for a moment. But at the same time, did I want them to know what I was thinking?
What would they think?
I brushed the thought away and returned to the fight at hand. The guardian still fighting, was starting to slow down, but every time he slammed down his massive sword, it sent shockwaves across the thin bridge leading up to the door, almost knocking me over.
"What the hell is that thing?" I heard Sebastian yell behind me. "How many hits can that thing take?"
I took a deep breath and continued launching spells at the animated statue, only slowing down every little while to glance behind me to ensure my friends were still okay. Garreth had blood spilling down his forehead from beneath his hair, and I noticed that Poppy had a limp. Despite the danger and the injuries, they were still fighting. I was silently cringing to myself the whole time, wishing I hadn't got them involved in the first place. Anything that happened to them at this point was my fault.
Eventually, the guardian fell with a loud thud, breaking apart into large pieces of rubble, some of which tumbled over the edges of the bridge. I was wishing the whole time that the guardian would have just killed Charles so that this entire thing could just be over.
Everyone was bent over and panting momentarily, trying to catch their breath before continuing me included, though I never took my eyes off of Charles. He only had one of his men left after the fight, and presumably the one who'd run away at the beginning after also forfeiting his wand. That is if he came back. I hadn't seen him since.
"There better not be any more surprises," Charles said, straightening himself out. He glanced behind me at my friends, who were regathered with their wands drawn on Charles.
"You're not going to get any further," Sebastian said, moving closer to my side.
"You really think so?" laughed Charles. "I'm better than all of you. A group of insolent little teenagers like yourselves won't stop me." Despite his words, we had him backed into a corner. He looked completely disheveled, and there was an unsettling look across his face that heavily contrasted with his usual cool and calm demeanor.
He knows he's lost.
"Expeliarmus!" He shouted, launching my wand from my hand. I watched in disappointment as my wand fell over the edge of the bridge and plummeted into the darkness below. What I did next surprised Charles entirely, as I'd never managed to use wandless magic before.
I held my hand out in front of me and motioned for him to come closer, which he did against his will, his feet dragging against the floor. There was definitely fear in his eyes as I grabbed his wand from his hand, throwing it into the darkness below as well.
Sebastian quickly took care of Charles' remaining sidekick with the petrification spell.
"You're going to tell me what you've done with all the teachers," I ordered, looking into his eyes with a sharp stare.
"They're all fine; I didn't kill any of them," he said, panicked. He was a coward.
"Then tell me where they are."
"I'll tell you if you promise that I live."
I chuckled. "Look at you, begging for your life like a coward. I'm not promising anything until you tell me where they are."
"Astronomy tower. They're alive, I promise, a simple petrification spell. You'll see."
I let go of his shirt, and he stumbled away from me, almost losing his balance at the edge of the bridge.
Right now, Charles felt so insignificant. All this time, I'd been so afraid. Looking at him now, I didn't know what I was scared of in the first place. He played many mind games, but in terms of power, he wasn't that great. Now that I had him backed into a corner, he was nothing. He stood there shaking with his tail between his legs, completely unable to defend himself.
"What are we going to do with him?" Natty asked me. "We can't leave him here."
"You're right," I said. I turned my attention back to Charles. It only took me a moment to decide what would be best. "Any last words?"
"L-last words? I thought you said I could live!"
"I made no such promise," I seethed. Before I could rethink what I was doing, I gave him a sharp kick in the chest, sending him flying over the edge of the bridge. His screams were heard for a few moments as he plummeted before slowly dissipating into nothing. I never heard him hit the bottom of the trench.
I turned to face my friends, who didn't seem to be repulsed by my actions. I let out a deep breath and regathered myself. "Okay, we need a plan now," I told them.
"The students are still being held in The Hall, so I suggest we get the teachers first. We'd need the numbers," Poppy said.
"I suspect some of the other students will help us fight as well once they see that we're trying," Ominis said. "We definitely have the advantage."
"How many are left?" Poppy asked.
"Well, they were guarding most of the exits, and a bunch of them scattered throughout the room as well. There's a few in the foyer before the main entrance as well," Imelda stated, "It's going to be hard to know for certain."
"Okay, well, let's just get going then. We'll figure this out when we get there."
