"What the fuck was that?" Los asked the second he had a chance. I rolled my eyes, I was hoping I could escape his prying.
"The Adonis kissed you like he was leaving for war!!" He nearly squealed.
"He wouldn't have been able to kiss me at all if you hadn't forced me to take a break with him." I snapped as I finished wiping the counters. The shop had closed about twenty minutes ago, and we were doing the nightly cleanup. If I were lucky, I'd make it home in time to eat something, check on my Dad, and grab a quick nap before heading to Splash. "Also, quit calling him Adonis. That's annoying. His name is Bennett."
"Oooh, Bennie baby." He clicked his tongue with a laugh. "Let me finish up here, and you head out, go catch up with Bennie." He teased.
"I have to work at Splash tonight. Even if I wasn't, I wouldn't be catching up with Bennett." I made sure to say his name nice and slow for emphasis.
"You work too much. You need to take a break, spend time with friends, get fucked by Bennie, something girl, damn."
"You know why I work. Hush."
"I know why you work, Do you?" He sassed, hand on hip, glaring at me. "You think you're working to take care of your Dad and provide this lavish life of yours." He continued, voice dripping with sarcasm. "When in reality, you work to keep yourself busy. To keep your mind off of what you need to deal with. Working two jobs and all these hours, you're also keeping yourself from having real relationships. Not just with men, but with your friends. You know, me, Eden, and Brynn? When is the last time you've seen them? Spent any amount of time with either of them that wasn't in Brew?"
"Fuck you, Los. Fuck you." I slammed the cleaning rag onto the counter and untied my apron. I walked quickly to the back, grabbed my things, and began to head out the door.
"Gemma! C'mon. I'm just trying to help you." Los pleaded as he followed behind. I flipped the bird again and climbed into my car, starting it up and driving away as quickly as possible. He had no fucking idea what my life was like, no fucking idea why I did anything. I could barely see the drive home, blinded by tears. Once I returned home, I sat in the car for a few moments, like usual, dreading going inside. I never knew what I would walk into and what mess would need to be cleaned up. While I was sitting, my phone rang. I hadn't even looked at it all evening. I turned it over to see that Los was calling after having sent several texts apologizing profusely. I felt bad ignoring him, but I couldn't bring myself to talk about it right now. I had to shelf it, and push it aside to prepare for whatever version of Dad was waiting for me.
When I tip-toed into the house, everything was silent, and the place was dark. I locked the door behind me, preparing to head to my room. Unfortunately, when I turned the corner, Daddy dearest was standing there, bottle in hand, staring.
"Dad?" I called out softly.
"Your Mother and Sister are dead." He spoke coldly, reliving that awful evening again. Something he'd been doing a lot more lately.
"Yes, Dad. I know. That was two years ago." I groaned, wanting to get this over with and regretting even coming home. I went to walk around him when his arm flew out, grabbing me. His strength was ridiculous for someone so clearly intoxicated.
"I wish it had been you." He slurred. I closed my eyes, squeezing them tight. I'd heard this all before. "You should've been driving, you should've been the one to die." He began to shout. I pulled out of his grasp.
"I know!! You've told me this before! I'm sorry. I'm sorry that it wasn't me!" I screamed in return. I started back toward the front door, deciding that I would head straight to Splash. I couldn't be here.
