I didn't really expect Bennett to text or call me. I haven't exactly been the best to him and despite that connection I still felt, I wasn't sure he still felt it. Thankfully, he did text, later that evening to thank me for lunch and make plans for another day. That turned into another and another and before long we were hanging out like two best friends.
"It's about time you had to tag along to a game." Brynn teased as we got ready together at Eden's place. Bennett had invited me to attend and meet up with everyone after. I knew next to nothing about Soccer, but Bennett was one of my favorite people and I wanted to support him. Eden assured me that watching him on the field would be incredibly sexy, which I laughed at. It had been very dry for several months. Bennett was the last person I was with and to say I didn't think about it quite frequently would be a lie. I was hoping our new friendship would lead to that again someday, sooner than later too.
"If you all had invited me before now, maybe I would have." I sassed back. Sorting through the variety of jerseys and shirts Eden offered for me to borrow for the game.
"Ooh! Eden! Let's buy a new jersey at the game." Brynn clapped her hands together with a mischievous grin. I looked back and forth between them, trying to figure out where this was going. Eden took a minute before she nodded happily.
"Yes!! Oh, this will be good."
"Care to fill me in?"
"You see... we're going to put you in one of Bennett's teammate jerseys and sit back and watch how jealous he becomes. Should be interesting."
"I think we're strictly friendzone now. Our time, it passed. It just wasn't right. That's okay too because he's a really good friend. I mean, I'm open to more, but I don't know." I rambled nervously as we finished gathering our things to head out. Of course, they dismissed my concerns, saying how they knew we both wanted to be together and were just making our way to that point. They assured me that letting him see me in someone else's jersey would be a good start. I had no idea who any of his teammates were other than Reed, so I just went with it.
The stadium was insane. The number of people was surprising. I had no idea just how popular our soccer team was. A part of me felt a swell of pride at how many people were showing up to watch Bennett and his team play. We hit the team shop up as soon as we arrived, and in a funny twist, all of Bennett's jerseys were already sold out. A part of me was jealous, thinking about all of the women who were wearing them. I'm sure a few men as well, but let's face it, Bennett was ridiculously attractive. That meant a lot of ladies were probably here to lust after him.
"They're called cleat chasers." Eden piped in, almost as if she could hear my thoughts, noticing me staring at the empty sales rack. "At least what we call 'em anyway. You'll get used to it. You're not wearing his tonight anyway." She tugged me along to Brynn who was purchasing a jersey with way too much excitement.
As soon as we exited the store, they pulled me aside to tuck the jersey down over my shirt. I looked down to see the team logo, matching Eden's jersey and Brynn's shirt, which they both wore to support Reed.
"Well, who am I rooting for?" I cocked a brow.
"Potter." Eden laughed. "He's nice enough, definitely a player and I don't mean the game. Bennett's gonna lose it." She laughed with a squeal leading us to our seats.
We got settled into our seats, which were located perfectly behind the team bench. If I wanted, I could possibly hop over the rail and jump right onto the field next to their bench. I felt a bit of nervousness as we sat, taking in the large stadium and thinking about watching Bennett at a live game. I wondered if he would react to seeing the other players' jersey on me, was it really that big of a deal? The girls were chatting between themselves while I was lost in thought. Talking wedding stuff, Eden and Reed were planning to be married in November, at the end of the season.
We were silenced pretty quickly when the festivities were beginning. The National Anthem was performed, some announcements were made about various charities and then the players were announced. I could see Bennett standing, his eyes laser-focused on the field, while the other team was waving and making their way onto the field. I hadn't talked to him in the last few days, they had an away game and had just returned for this first home game of several. He knew I was coming, but there was still this electric feeling, seeing him in his element.
We all cheered for our team as they were announced, making sure to be extra wild when they called out Reed and eventually Bennett. They ran, waving as well, heading to the bench, closer to us. My face was starting to hurt from all the smiling I had been doing already and the game hadn't even begun. As they were all dispersing, preparing to start the game, Reed turned toward us, giving Eden a smile with a wink. She returned the gesture and then jumped to her feet when Bennett walked up next to him.
He smiled, giving a quick wave but before he could step away, Eden grabbed me up, twirling me around to show Bennett the jersey I wore. Brynn stood next to me, her eyes wide in surprise.
"He looks thoroughly pissed." She laughed. I turned in Eden's arms, to see Bennett glaring at me. I shrugged my shoulders, hoping to convey to him that I was a victim in this setup. He shook his head, glancing over to the bench, ignoring calls for him, and stalked toward us. I looked at the girls, unsure of what he was about to do. I'd never seen such a look on his face before and he was about to start a game, what was he doing coming toward me?!
Bennett hopped up on the rail, motioning for me to come to him. It took me a minute to register before I did as he requested and as soon as I was within reach, he grabbed the jersey in his fist, tugging me to him. I yelped in surprise.
"You can wear that jersey for this game and this game only. I'll show you who the better player is tonight and if at the end of the night, you agree it isn't Potter, then I get to rip that jersey off of you." He growled in my ear before jumping down and rushing over to his team. I could feel the heat flushing my face, repeating the words he said over in my head. Did he mean? Oh my. Perhaps we weren't as in the friend zone as I thought. I turned to head back to my seat and both Brynn and Eden were grinning like fools, fanning themselves.
"That went much faster and so much better than I expected."
"Holy Fuck."
"Shut up." I gritted out, feeling a tad embarrassed. "The whole stadium saw that!" I slumped down in my seat as the girls laughed at my situation.
Once the game was underway, the attention was off me, and for that I was grateful. I watched with intense interest as our team raced around the field. Eden tried to break down the whole process of the game for me as it was happening, but I had a hard time following. The only thing I could follow was Bennett's amazing body in its full athletic glory. He owned the field, dominating against the other team, and just before the half, he scored their first goal.
The team ran up to him, all celebrating as he raised his arms in the air. His fists raised as he screamed out before heading to the bench. He looked over toward me, giving me the biggest smile and a wink before following the team to the tunnel for the half. I sat back, breathless from the celebration and knowing he meant every word of what he said, he was going to be ripping this jersey from me tonight.
